I need to start with a caveat. When I agreed to review these books I didn't realise they were an ongoing series, of short novellas rather than a traditional type of series, and that's something I never read, although I love traditional series. Still, I started with book one on Saturday and quickly became engrossed in the world of Witchwood. The description covers the storyline that's going to be revealed over a series of books, and each are a reasonably priced quick read. As I said its not how I prefer to read, but I'm a quick reader, I've friends who only have limited time to read and I'm sure they'd enjoy this type of book. It's certainly worked for womens magazines for many years, I can recall my mothers ones serialising books back in the sixties so though its new to e-books the format certainly works.
Its a beautifully descriptive book, full of evocative mystery and mood setting. I really feel as if I'm one with whatever scene Patti sets. I do feel its aimed at the Young Adult market and that's a genre I only dip into occasionally, but this is so well written that it will appeal to older readers too looking for something a bit different. I enjoyed the characters, there are a lot of them and I did find it difficult remembering just who was who, and where they fit in the tale but then for an ongoing series we need lots of people to carry the story and keep it interesting. The basic plot is laid out but its early in the series so far, and though I've an idea where the story is going its very open as to what adventures are going to be revealed, and what sort of magic and mystical creatures it will contain.
What's incredibly useful is the info at the end of the book on the witches calender, the herbs used in spells, crystals and their meanings, animal symbols and a host of other interesting details that will help the reader follow what promises to be a complex series.
Even though I don't usually read books in this format I found the world and people Patti has created to be engrossing, and the writing style is just perfect for the story that's slowly being revealed. Its like drawing back a curtain to expose another world, each glimpse tantalises and seduces the reader into wanting more. Alexandria is the perfect heroine for this tale, she has a blend of innocence, combined with intelligence and a strong sense of morality. With the evil I feel is coming she will need to be able to draw on all her strengths to do the right thing.
Overall even though its not my preferred type of reading I can see how this series will appeal to young adults and others who have limited time for reading. Its an exciting story broken down into easily read bite sized instalments. Though my star rating is a three and a half-only because of my personal reading preferences, I can see that for the right reader this will be a five star series.
Witchwood Estate - Going Home (bk 1) (Witchwood Estate - Episodic, short story series)
This story has loads of flashbacks to help you understand how Alexandria grew up and why she must leave her new home behind and go back to her ancestral estate. The writing is evocative and imaginative and though set in small towns it is on par with many urban fantasy series as well as urban paranormal series. Even though this is a novelette or short story series I truly enjoyed it!
The world contained within this short book series is amazing and visceral. I would recommend it to anyone who reads modern fantasy or paranormal mystery. You never know what will happen next and before you know it the book is over And you want MORE! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have :) I can't wait to read the next episode !!!
Witchwood Estate - Ferntree Falls (book 2 - Episodic series)
Alexandria has finally made it home and boy has it changed! But then I guess 12 years will do that... The town still has all its colonial charm and old-fashioned buildings but new buildings and danger lurk around unseen corners. Is Alexandria up for the homecoming she has been waiting for all her life or will she find she is in over her head?
I really don't want to say too much so as to not give away any surprises in the plot line... just let me say this book is full of enough suspense and supernatural elements to make up for it's episodic nature! I really enjoyed it and can not wait to read the next episode Witchwood Estate - Cursed (bk3 - short story series)!!!
***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers
I was so caught up in the story that before I knew it I was at the end of the book! Thankfully I had book 2 to move onto straight away.
Ferntree Falls, book two is even better than book one, who'd have thought it possible? Alexandria arrives at her home town and is met by Raymond, he arrives late for her, and she has an instant dislike to him. A well earned one because he really is horrid. In this story we also meet his equally horrid wife Vera. I won't go into spoiler detail but suffice to say Alexandria isn't welcomed with open arms by them. This book also introduces us to River who is a shape shifter and when he isn't in human form he is a gorgeous white wolf. We meet Kat who seems like a spoiled little rich girl, yet is nice to Alexandria, but at the end of the book you have to ask yourself if it's all been a ruse? Talk about a cliff hanger.
One of the things I love about these books is the detail that Patti Roberts goes into when she is describing things. As these books are heavily based on witches, there are amazing spells in them, including the ingredients used etc. You really believe you are reading the book of a real witch. MAYBE Patti is one??? Either way it makes the books that much more enthralling.
Patti describes these books well, saying that they are a teen paranormal series, BUT for the young at heart too. I am 48 and I LOVE this series, it's a light quick read yet as fully engrossing as any TV series. I recommend these books and this series to young and old. It would actually make an awesome TV show, so any would be producers out there reading this, take note!
