I loved this book. Its a tough story based around the 900 day seige of Leningrad. The story is cold in a lot of the description with the cold Russian mother who finds it hard to love her daughters. To the cold weather, the Winter Garden and the harsh Russian winter.

Its a lovely story recommended to me from a book club. I did Russian language and history at school so I have an interest in Russian history, but its a lovely story that will keep you turning the pages

You need a lot of patience for this book, it doesn't really get going until the second half but once it gets going it really rolls. I don't know much about Russian history so I found it really interesting. I couldn't bond with the characters as I found them all pretty unlikeable but the essence of the story made up for that.

Overall a good read, the most enjoyable parts and characters were the ones told in the story of the siege.

Moving and so real, a truly beautiful read. The sufferings of war torn Europe, families coping with every day life, hardships endured.

I won't say too much about the story itself, as I don't wish to spoil the srtory for anyone. IMO it's a must-read - but make sure you have a box of tissues beside you when you do. I am lucky enough not to have lived through a war myself, but I come from Malta, which was the most bombed place in WW2 - I have heard stories of the lengths people went to in order to acquire food - there was a blockade around the island and before the Santa Maria convoy manged to limp through the island was one week away from starvation/surrender. I have heard stories of people being blown to pieces in the bombing raids, and I can understand how that kind of constant fear can leave indelible marks on the people who survive. My grandfather never came home from that war and my grandmother mourned him for the rest of her life, so I found the main character in Winter Garden entirely believable: tragic, but entirely real.

I've read some negative reviews - the reviewers obviously have no concept of what slow starvation, death and despair can do to a person. Ignore them - this is a book that is definitely worth reading, and the empathic reader will find it hard to put down before it's finished.
