Excellent book, thoroughly recommended! I hit a dead-end with researching one of my 4g grandfathers but this book opened up some extra avenues for research. It has a useful table on page 10 and that allowed me to find which division my ancestor had been assigned to - I already knew that he was commissioned in 1796, and I'd found his company number at the National Archives, but this table confirmed that he was assigned to the Portsmouth division. And there's lots of guidance on where to follow up additional leads in the National Archives, including lists of documents and what you might find in them.

There's also a lot of background on pay, prize money, social conditions outside of the service (e.g. comparisons with aglab pay etc), uniforms, rations, and barrack life too - fascinating stuff, and written in an entertaining style. At first, I thought I'd just dip in and out of the various sections for reference, but the whole book is actually very readable and enjoyable. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Book Review: Tracing your Royal Marine Ancestors a Guide for Family Historians by Richard Brooks and Matthew Little. ISBN 978 1 84415869. Review by John Curry

The book title almost succeeded in putting me of this small 172 page book, fortunately the name Richard Brooks caught my eye. As I greatly enjoyed his monumental Cassell's Battlefields of Britain & Ireland, I thought I would devote a few moments to reading his latest work.

What I discovered was a fascinatingly detailed account of the Royal Navy Marines from the 17th century to the present day. The book has chapters on organisation, administration, operations etc. Each chapter is packed with interesting little details, such as for 19c exercise they practiced sham fights across the deck (preferably without bayonets).

I did appreciate the quote `There is no fighting force under the crown less understood than the marines. Few trouble themselves to know more than that they are useful. Why they exist or why they are useful are not questions which attract attention'. Army and Navy Gazette 7 February 1874.

In addition, as the book was ostensibly targeted at those tracing their ancestors, it has a detailed compilation of places, such as websites, to find out more about the marines.

I found the book was not expensive and was well worth exploring.
The book is published in association with the Royal Marines Museum.
