I find myself wondering how to review a book which is a translation. The story itself is all the work of Casanova himself, whereas the translation is what has enabled me to read it. The tale is an unusual one, of the incarceration of a man known better for the exploits of his later life. He is thrown into a prison in the company of some bizarre fellow prisoners and wardens. It's the story of the ingenuity he used to effect an escape... eventually!

I found the old style of the language a little difficult to get to grips with. The sentences were, to my modern ear, over long and complex, but this was the style at the time. The translator has enabled this to be accessible today and it's certainly a good read.

This story concerns Casanova's incarceration in, and escape from. the Leads prison in Venice. I was not sure what to expect, but found that I couldn't put it down! Without wishing to put any 'spoilers' in this review, the escape story is funny and far-fetched. There are bone-headed prison warders, letters written with sharpened fingernails, a speedy getaway in a gondola with two punters and a hair-raising moment where it almost went horribly wrong for Casanova.

The translation has been sensitively done, with the result that the story flows really well.

I don't know if I got a dodgy print but the copy of this book I have has been terribly formatted and edited, in fact I don't think it was edited at all. Absolutely sporadic spacing of words that changes with almost every paragraph not to mention the cover that looks like it was done in Photoshop within 5 minutes.

That is the fault of the publisher and maybe Lawston. The story, or rather account, is of course amazing, it's for that reason it even gets 4 stars. Casanova's account is full of gripping moments and a true tale of daring and desperation. At times you may find yourself wondering if such things even happened as he says they did. The writing is of course very flowery which can be a bit hard to decipher sometimes but it never really held back my enjoyment of it, what more would you expect from Casanova?
