The best way to approach this is to imagine that it is a rehash of the original trilogy (episodes IV, V and VI). A fascinating insight into story building and the mind which created a modern phenomenon which continues to entertain.
That said, I would not recommend this for someone who only has a passing interest in star wars. I really enjoyed it and it made me recall the release of the original film in the 70s.

Those who have criticized the story for lacking action and not really going anywhere are right, in large part. It isn't helped by the fact that so much of of the adventure seems to take place between panels, almost as if they put it together while working on tight deadlines or severely limiting space/page count. As a result, everything feels rushed and time-compressed. Heck, the princess and Annikin supposedly "fall in love" over a period of time that can't be more than a day or two. Very "Romeo and Juliet" I guess. What is left being is exceedingly difficult to follow in spots.
Still, it makes for an interesting read if you're a fan of the franchise.
