Having read all of Brené Brown’s previous books, I was looking forward to Rising Strong and it certainly delivered. Building on the theories and principles of her two previous books, The Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly, Rising Strong completes the arc by outlining how we can pick ourselves back up again after a fall or perceived failure—outcomes that, she explains, are inevitable at some point or another if we dare greatly and endeavour to live whole-hearted lives.

The book guides us through the Rising Strong process, explaining how we can apply the framework to different situations and experiences. She is careful to explain this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution and this is one of the key factors that makes this book so valuable.

Rather than telling readers what to think and which conclusions to draw (as many personal development books do), she provides us with the questions and tools to get curious with ourselves and deepen our understanding of why we feel what we feel, think what we think and do what we do.

The Rising Strong process is summarised as follows:

1. The Reckoning: walking into our story (recognising and getting curious with our feelings, thoughts and actions)

2. The Rumble: owning our story (getting honest about the stories we’re creating and challenging them)

3. Revolution: Creating a new ending (taking the key lessons from our rumble and applying them to create new, braver stories that enable us to live wholeheartedly)

Through sharing case studies and her own anecdotes (including those in which she acknowledges she is capable of being the shamer as well as feeling ashamed), she shows what this process looks like in practice.

This is not an easy read. Not because it hasn't been written beautifully- which it was Brene uses her storytelling muscle to perfection. It's not an easy read because while there's a process to rising strong Brene teaches us that it's no easy. That we need to sit with our discomfort. That we need to name shame. That we can't do it all. But we learn that we are in it together.

I love Brene Brown. Love her TED talk and loved her last book.

I got loads from reading this and I love how she speaks from experience even when admitting her own faults.

The book really resonated me and I am planning on reading it again very soon.

Would highly recommend.

I couldn't put this book down having read each of her other titles. What speaks to me are her own personal stories, somehow I can digest these so well and feel connected to all of us who are daring to live this "whole hearted" life. This book really does help, as I was beginning to wonder if it was just me who was struggling! I've taken many little steps to be wholehearted, yet I have ended up recently hurt and wondering what on earth happened? Now I feel more inspired that I can get up and grow further. I love the idea of being curious about the "stories we make up"- I have believed them for a long time because they can feel so true. Now I'm trying her way, firstly to feel the feelings and THEN to look at what story I've made up, then to check it out. Thanks Brene.

The story I'm telling myself is that I should have started with one of Brene's earlier books as this one has been very disappointing. It feels like a rehash of her insights on shame and vulnerability twisted and spun towards a vague goal of rising strong. The long anecdotes and incessant stream of consciousness feels very indulgent. There is too much autobiographical information, too much celebration of all things Texan, and far too much folksy foul language. For even more filler, there are gratuitous quotes and references from a vast universe of pop culture. The book, process and underlying reasoning seem contrived and chaotic. A good book if you're looking to celebrate Brene, not so good if you're seeking answers.

As a working professional and parent to three older daughters there were many things to relate to in this book that were extremely insightful and clearly explained. Experiences, beating yourself up about stuff and leading by example are constant themes and strategies for resolving issues are given with clarity. The other side to the book is that it has made me laugh out loud about my own discomfort in all that emotional speak. Brené doesn't mince her words and keeps it all at ground level and ALMOST has me looking forward to the "year-long street fight" heading my way. I thoroughly recommend it.

I did, in the end, enjoy this book very much. A great deal of work has gone into it. It is about overcoming difficult times and events by approaching them in a spirit of integrity, which as Ms Brown says, is "...choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast or easy; and choosing to practise our values rather than simply professing them." However these noble sentiments are couched throughout the book in terms of 'stories' that we 'make up' (sorry, but I thought that defined make-believe, not reality) and heavy use of the terms 'reckoning' (being aware of an issue), and 'rumbling with it' (turning it over in one's mind) in order to achieve a resolution. There is so much about rumbling, reckoning and making up stories that I found it hard to remember what the book was really about. It complicates what should be a straightforward process. There are some very good quotations and definitions in the text, though I do wish American authors, who must know their books will be widely read in the UK as well as the US, would at least hint at the meaning of some of their cherished expressions, because I haven't a clue!
