Not at all sure about this book. It's written in the first person in the Name of Malcolm Bannister, a Virginia lawyer (of course) who is stitched up by the Feds and given a 10 year custodial sentence for something he claims he didn't do. The story starts with Bannister in prison and builds up his character in order to get the reader's sympathy for his situation but as the story unravels it becomes obvious that our Malcolm is even more devious than the authorities. I'm not going to give out any spoilers but the plot centres around the murder of a Federal Judge and his girlfriend and how Bannister tries to use the crime to get himself pardoned and end up a rich man in the process. It's a neatly put together story but is prone to ramble in places and become a little too convoluted. As morality tales go it's a bit of a failure but a great vehicle to bash the FBI and Federal justice system. An enjoyable romp but unusually lightweight for Grisham.

I am,(and remain) a big fan of John Grisham and his previous works. I have read many of his books, and so it was with a sense of high expectation that I obtained 'The Racketeer' as part of my holiday reading materiel. What a disappointment! I thought that it had a very shallow and uninteresting plot, that did very little to stimulate my interest. This was in sharp contrast to the other books of his that I have read. By the time that I was about a third of the way into the book, I had a very good idea as to what was going to happen later in the story as far as the main characters were concerned, and I was largely proved correct. I have given the book one star because that is the lowest grade that Amazon will allow, but I would not recommend this book even to my worst enemy..

If you like a well thought out thriller then this book is for you. Meticulous in his description of the background to his story you are left feeling a great deal of empathy for the main character. I didn't want to put this book down.

Has avid reader of John Grisham, I felt that he should stick to courtroom drama's where he eccels .
Too much improbable situations for my liking.

Although a some what unlikely plot it reads really well and makes you want to carry on reading. As usual with Grisham you root for the characters...

Very detailed despite not much research. A little confusing in places ( my fault?) But very entertaining. A real page-turner indeed and a satisfying ending. Recommend!

Interesting beginnings then our ethical innocent hero goes money Mad, unprincipled and flat as a character. Last half no suspense
