[This review completely rewritten to be more concise]

The NRSV is a modern translation, towards the literal, word-for-word end of the spectrum - though with one exception, which is that it tries very hard to be gender neutral. One might say it tries a bit too hard in this area, though personally it's not an issue I care about.

The NRSV has two main features that I find attractive:

1. It makes little or no effort to harmonise or "smooth-out" contradictions or problems.

2. It doesn't try to (mis)translate the Old Testament for the sake of being consistent with the interpretations of it made by the New Testament authors.

Depending on your point of view, these may seem like bad things rather than features. If you want a Bible made with a more "inerrantist" philosophy, I'd recommend the English Standard Version instead. But it's my belief that the NRSV does a good job of translating the original text without distortion.

This is a new(ish) version of The Bible which is used in many C of E churches today. The language is more easily understandable in today's world and in this modern translation some words have been replaced e.g. "love" instead of "charity" in a passage often used at weddings. This is a nice version for modern or first time readers.

I was looking for a Bible which was written in modern understandable language but retaining the original text. This Version is exactly right for me. Written in everyday English it is an up to date version of the King James Version, which is liked by many, but found the 1600 language difficult to fully understand. I have bought others in the past but those versions have lost total comprehensibility, I was missing the meaning of many passages. This Bible will be with me for many years to come, and be the only source of the Anglicized Faith for me.

The NRSV is a fantastic version of the Bible for all users. The language is clear, easy to understand contemporary English, but still retains the poetic and dignified feel that other contemporary translations don't quite manage. The footnotes at the bottom of each page show alternative translations from other ancient sources, which enables the reader to think more deeply about what each passage is saying, which is ideal for all users: for scholars, it improves study; for private use, it encourages deeper contemplation. The translation is also such that it is as easy to follow read aloud as it is alone and silently. I would certainly reccommend this version to anyone.

I bought this because I wanted a modern translation that included both Old and New Testaments. Not being familiar with the books of the Apocrypha I regarded them as a bonus. I still do; but I now understand why the scholars of the King James (Authorised) version of 1611 decided to omit them as, although they are of considerable historical interest, they add little to ones understanding of religion.

The edition itself is well presented and clearly printed. While the page headers and the footnotes are useful and informative, a short introductory paragraph to each book such as is included in many other versions would be a useful addition.

I recommend this as a useful addition to anyone's bookshelf. Pity they use the american spelling of angicisi(z)e.

THE PRESENT FOR A NEW ENTRANT INTO THE ANGLICAN FAITH.

I WANTED TO FIND A BIBLE THAT WAS UP TO-DATE, AND WHICH OUR GRANDDAUGHTER WOULD HELP HER TO PREPARE FOR HER CONFIRMATION IN GERMANY.

I PERUSED SEVERAL BIBLES AND DISCUSSED THE CONTENTS WITH SEVERAL OF THE UK CLERGY BEFORE DECIDING ON THIS NRSV BIBLE.

HAPPILY, THE BISHOP IN GERMANY SIGNED THE BIBLE AT THE END OF THE SERVICE AND OUR GRANDDAUGHTER IS THRILLED WITH IT.
