Product description

About the Author

Sibylle von Olfers is the author of the original German folk tale, Etwas von den Wurzelkindem, which sold 800,000 copies in 1906 and exactly a century later Sieglinde Schoen Smith's quilted interpretation, Mother Earth & Her Children won the top prize at America's most prestigious quilt show. Jack Zipes, an acknowledged expert on folklore, has translated the text.

The illustrations in this book are simply gorgeous.
I love the history behind this book too; as detailed at the back.

I think perhaps there is something lost in translation with the story; as I find it a little odd; but still a book that is loved by both my almost 4yr old son, myself and the children I mind.

This is a wonderful story, about the changing seasons, about children taking care of nature's creatures, and gives children a sense of the goodness of nature and the world. The illustrations are fabulous, really rich and the attention to detail is lovely. If you only buy one book for that special child in your life, make it this one. The story and pictures make children and adults want to come back to it again and again, throughout the year and throughout a child's development. I can't praise this book highly enough.

It's a lovely book. Based on a soul-touching story. All images are amazing. My three year old child loves to see these hearth children taking care of the insects. It's really worth to buy.

It is a lovely book but not what I thought I was getting. Do read the description carefully as the front illustration looks like it is from the original book... but the inside illustrations are photographs of a quilt version. I'm sending mine back and will try and hunt down the original I remember from my childhood.

For non-cristians this is a special way to celebrate the equivalent of easter/spring/christmas/winter with gentel pictures, easily understood by young children, and especially enjoyable for grandmothers to read out loud.

Beautiful book, and I love that the translation has been made to rhyme. I bought this for my 3 year old and I think perhaps it's a bit young for him, there aren't as many words per page as we normally have, but for now it is fine and I love that it is waking up his imagination.
