Very detailed and no doubt accurate account it is certainly fascinating but with some many facts it can get a little repetitive. Some quaint personal stories recounted that bring it alive. You really need to be interested in the aircraft to make it to the end. Overall a worthwhile read for the aviation enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best book about this unique plane and what it was like to fly in it 11 Dec. 2013
By Jeffrey Canaday - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito is one of those cool WWII combat planes that just looks "right", and was a star from the beginning of its career. Written in an engaging narrative style, this book documents how the plane that nearly never was went on to charm its crews and frustrate and terrorize its enemies. Based on interviews, in-depth research and piles of action reports, Mosquito Missions tells the story from the perspective of the pilots and navigators that flew them as photo-recon planes, low-altitude, long-range bombers, night fighters, anti-submarine bombers, etc. True to its title, the book covers virtually every type of mission, and sometimes, seemingly every mission ever flown. Occasionally, too many similar missions were detailed for my interest, but I can see how someone would appreciate something about each mission included. However, this is NOT just a compendium of planes, crews and their destinations, and for that reason, it held my interest to the end. Most of the time, the author, through the words of the crews themselves puts us in the plane and lets us feel, the essence of combat in a plane whose only defense was its speed, and the quick thinking of its crew. If you want to know how this beautiful plane was used in its day, my hearty suggestion is to buy this book, then skip if you dare the more tedious portions when one mission begins to run into another.

A note to the editor. There were too-frequent instances of repeated sentences and sometimes whole paragraphs, as if the book were assembled by cutting and pasting. Please go through it in the next edition and cut out the overlap in the sections. They are disconcerting in a book of this quality and historical importance.

Note to shoppers: The author has a similar book entitled "Mosquito: Menacing the Reich" which is based on the same background material. I found Mosquito Missions to be my favorite version of the two because the storytelling was superior.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mosquito at War! 9 Aug. 2013
By Mike O'Connor - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Brit author Martin Bowman, who has penned a number of books on the Mosquito, cranks out yet another volume on De Havilland's wooder wonder with MOSQUITO MISSIONS, RAF AND COMMONWEALTH DE HAVILLAND MOSQUITOES. A 2012 Pen & Sword Books release, Bowman's book should appeal to air combat fans as it's bursting with action!

Bowman packages his material into subject-arranged chapters, detailing Mosquito PR ops, day and night bombing strikes, intruder ops, nightfighter missions, convoy strikes, etc. Dozens of vivid, compelling reminiscences by Mossie aircrew are presented that, together, present a very comprehensive history of the Mossie at war. To be honest, MOSQUITO MISSIONS is best savored a chapter at a time; the book being so dense with facts, figures and yank-and-bank air combats that it gets to be overload.

The book is illustrated with b&w and color photographs of what is one of the most elegant designs in aviation history.

So, if you're an RAF enthusiast, bomber buff or just enjoy spellbinding aerial action, Bowman's book is a must-have. Recommended.
