Product description

Review

(Reviewed together with 'Towards a Poetics of Music and the Arts') (T)hese two short books by the distinguished music critic Christopher Wintle (...) seek to revive criticism as a means of thought and not just as a source of judgements and information. (...) What is more, he writes too well to speak only to musicians. (...) We have the example of a thinker for whom all the arts belong together and shed light on each other, something rare in criticism since Goethe and Ruskin pursued their idea of art wherever it led them. Top Customer Reviews

By Kate Hopkins TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 8 July 2011
Format: Paperback
There is much wisdom, wit, and thought-provoking material in this excellent collection of thoughts and aphorisms. Music, particularly opera, plays a major role, and there are also superb aphorisms and thoughts on film, literature, art, philosophy and life, including some very amusing sections on life and on the business world and employment. A book to read, re-read, and use as the inspiration for lots of other reading, and for lots of listening to music and theatre trips! The beautifully produced volume, a real bargain, also contains some superb illustrations by Brazilianm UK-resident artist Ana Maria Pacheco - proof that there's some much superior talent in the British art world today to Tracey Emin and her like! A treasure of a book.
