Review

In my opinion, one of the greatest inspirational and motivational books ever written in the United States is The Magic of Believing by Claude M. Bristol.
Rev. Norman Vincent Peale
The Magic of Believing changed my life. Read it and any problem can be solved, happiness can be achieved, great rewards can be reaped.
Phyllis Diller
I began practicing the principles and philosophies in The Magic of Believing and found the secret of a successful formula. I can truthfully say that since reading this book, I have experienced greater happiness.

A love for the late, great Phyliss Diller led me to find this book. Astounding theories, many I have practised. There is a lot of sound advice here. Skeptics may mock it but it has been a driving force for me in my own day to day life and work. I'll let you know if I get there!

This is not a good self help guide. He basically says that the pure power of belief will change the world outside of you without your direct interaction, and effectively bring you good luck. He does not say that if you focus on lottery numbers hard enough they will come up, but that is essentially exactly what he means, and his endless anecdotes are pretty much tantamount to this. He quotes 'scientists' as having proof, who have now shown to not have produced anything of meaning. It gives false hope to people that wishful thinking will get them through.

I think Darren Brown's exposition on how to create your own 'luck' is a much fairer and realistic: a positive and expectant attitude makes us active about searching for opportunities and resources - where a negative attitude would dry up that enthusiasm - in short, because we look, we find; therefore confidence brings 'luck'.
