From the Back Cover

Legendary woodturner Stephen Hogbin's work has been groundbreaking at every turn. He first burst on the scene in the early 1970s with an exhibition of turnings unlike anything seen before-cut apart, re-assembled, enhanced by carving, and bearing little resemblance to the standard round stuff that had previously characterized the lathe. Now, the internationally recognized designer examines eleven of his finest and most innovative creations, distilling each piece to a useful project any woodturner can replicate. This is the first time Hogbin has described his techniques and presented his ideas in step-by-step project format. All of these projects begin with the lathe, but each features inventive cutting into the turned elements and recombining the pieces to make entirely new forms. They do not require advanced technical skills, but will encourage you to break out of the basic vocabulary of woodturning and see marvelous new possibilities. Hogbin on Woodturning reveals how a master designer integrates his visionary concepts with practical work at the lathe, allowing each to feed into the other. By replicating Hogbin's turning methods in your own home workshop, you'll gain stimulating new insight into the lathe and discover how to get the most out of your craft. A contemporary woodturning legend reveals his groundbreaking techniques: o Eleven Hogbin masterpieces you can make in your own workshop o Practical projects for servers, bowls, walking sticks, tables, stools, chairs and more o How to replicate the author's innovative turning techniques o Detailed instructions, expert tips, and clear step-by-step photographs o Cogent insights into a premier artist's thinking about his craft o Stunning color photographs of spectacular award-winning work

5.0 out of 5 stars Hogbin is brilliant!!! 22 Sept. 2013

So glad Stephen finally wrote this book! It is wonderful to see more details about the building process and clever adaptations that he uses in service to form. However, it is not just the technical solutions that make the book valuable, it is the underlying attitude of curiosity and demonstrated ability to approach an idea from many different angles that is so refreshing and stimulating. His humor, humility, and great humanity shine through as well in the writing, and he has a rare gift for articulating intention in the object without pretense. His wit and insight are as formidable as those of his teacher -David Pye, and he has greatly expanded the sense of possibility for us all. His work has been an important inspiration to a generation of makers, and it's a real delight to learn more about his approach. BRAVO!
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the sequel! 8 April 2013

Every artist working in one of the craft media will be delighted to see how Hogbin has developed his questions since his first exploratory voyage into cutting and recombining lathe-turned objects during a long-ago visit to Australia. ( Woodturning-the Purpose of the Object, 1980) He continues to defy the limits of scale with new vision and newly crafted tools. He has enlisted color as any ally in the quest. He has transcended the symmetry of the lathe with sensuous objects that beg to be held, turned over, or circumnavigated. The compass for all of these discoveries is a stubborn belief that useful things should be beautiful.

Much of this exploration takes place in a very plain room, designed for those mind experiments that take Hogbin where no woodturner has gone before. And the pencil is the first essential tool of the craft.

Hogbin is a master of the arts, this is a great read for anyone needing a little inspiration and a different spin on wood art The book leads the reader through Hogbin's thought process as well as the build process of the projects shown. Easy to understand book, one of the better woodturning books I have read.

Wonderful and different methods of Woodturning. Some methods I'll try, other methods I'll just admire and maybe attempt.
Beautiful work!
