"An excellent introduction."--"Historical Association Review"

"Becher succeeds in combining a masterful account of the life stages of the 'powerful figure' and the myth of Charlemagne with a precise and impressive representation of his era."--Die Zeit

"A remarkably informed, informative, and admirably up-to-date 'personal interpretation' of the Frankish emperor's character, reign, and legacy. . . . Highly recommended."--Choice

One of the most badly written books I have ever read. It skips around the facts constantly introducing new subjects without explanation.
Tedious and tiresome, I had to give up reading it and I am really interested In the subject.

With only 141 pages of actual text this is more a brief synopsis of the a life that altered European history and culture.
Well informed it suffers from the feeling that it is a translation with it's use of English. That said it will form part of the newer reference books on the subject along with Barbero's "Father of a Continent".
Both books opt for a subject driven style and not a historical progession which ristricts the biographical feel for Charlemagne. The Emperor's motivations and rationals are explored but in our terms, there is no sense of empathy with the man by the books end.
The questions first raised in Charles Edward Russell's "First of the Moderns" still remain but Russell is still the more entertaining read.

The book wasn't exactly the world's most interesting read, but it was short enough that you get all the major details of his life without losing interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 7 Jan. 2013
By Joseph P. Bradley - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this as a Christmas present for my sixth grade son who is a young history buff. He was excited when he opened it and jumped right into reading it. He has enjoyed it and it has also led to some very interesting discussions. The book is not overly long or too difficult. The author uses an excellen technique of opening the story with the coronation on Christmas day in 800 A.D. which worked perfectly into hooking my son into wanting to know the background behind this fascinating scene.

The book is a fine quality paperback with good cover and is comfortable to read. It arrived promptly and in good condition. I'm very happy with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great at giving you all the basics of the life and times of Charlemagne. 25 Nov. 2013
By Steven H. Hoskins - Published on Amazon.com

I found the book to be very informative. The author was very succinct in getting all of the necessary information across, he didn't waste time on unnecessary commentary. I also think he did an excellent job of being objective. I'm quite glad I read the book.

My only complaint what that the writing style was a little dry. However, it was originally written in German (I think), so it may be partially the translators fault.
