Review

No family saga would be complete without a villain, and this book has a good one, a well-drawn and believable character whose motivations are understandable. This thoroughly engaging old-school, multigenerational saga harks back to the work of Malcolm Macdonald, Belva Plain, and Irwin Shaw. "Booklist"

Archer knows how to dole out tiny crumbs of suspense right up to the last page, which ends with...a really excellent cliffhanger. "Washington Post"

The most gripping of the Clifton Chronicles yet. The tension and the build-up are terrific, and kept this reader on the edge of his seat. "The Observer (UK)""

This is the fourth book in the Clifton chronicles series and this story centres on the Building and launch of a world class passenger liner. But, as may be expected, the tale twists and turns in true Archer fashion. A couple of characters from earlier volumes take on a major role, determined to exact revenge on the Barringto/Clifton families.

This series has exceeded my expectation in every way. It's filled with memorable characters who are developing as the years go by. I like the way a smattering of fact is interwoven, particularly with political events and practice and the shipbuilding is similar to that of the QE2 in the 1960s. Nefarious share dealing plays an interesting role in the fortunes of both the company and individuals and a couple of characters get their come uppance.

These books may not be great literature but they are well written, with tight plotting. I've found each book totally absorbing. Exceptionally well crafted escapist fiction and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series as some light holiday reading.

I really had trouble putting this book down as I just had to find out what happened in each moment of suspense. Be sure to buy the sequel to the book you're just starting as you will be hooked by the final cliff-hanger. Clever technique for book sales but who doesn't enjoy a good read?

Once again it ends on an excruciating cliffhanger but luckily part 5 is available. There's lots of dodgy stock dealing in this one plus some tragedy. Sebastian comes into his own and we meet a fish paste millionaire from Yorkshire. Of course the usual baddies are there, Major Fisher, Lady Virginia,Don Pedro Martinez and the IRA. Another enjoyable instalment.

Great historic facts included in a great story line but such an easy read. The Chronicles are addictive. Looking forward to reading more of the series.

This is part 4 of 7 series and as previously I couldn't put this down, his factual knowledge of the politics was so good and written as for the ordinary members of the public to be able to understand, I so applaud his style of writing and although I have finished the series I am still thinking of the books and will probably read through again.

I brought this as a gift for my mum, as with all the others, her response was that this book in her opinion was better than the previous. At least we know now who died, the endless conversations I've had with her fretting! I won't spoil the ending for you good people but now its a whole other conversation from what appears to be a great cliffhanger once again!

Can't wait for the next one. Intrigue and suspense of a tale which you can not put down until you have to get the next book.
