You can buy the Surface 2 64Gb directly from Microsoft, John Lewis, Argos etc at its standard retail price of £439. I have no idea why Amazon is charging £610 for it.
I highly recommend this as an iPad beater - better design, more flexible (USB3 and Micro-SD slots), full MS Office built in. The two position built-in kickstand means that you can use it sitting on your lap or in bed without having to hold it all the time, like you would with a conventional Apple or Android tablet. Once you've tried it, you'll love its flexibility. It's also a true 16:9 format widescreen display, so movies display on the whole screen instead of having black bars top and bottom as they do on an iPad.
I highly recommend it - but I strongly suggest you go for 64Gb instead of the 32Gb model, so you don't outgrow it as you add more apps / downloaded content - although you can add more external storage via the USB3 and MicroSD slots as well.

Firstly, I bought my Surface 2 64GB direct from MS (availing of the student discount) for less than a 16 GB iPad Air on Amazon or from PC World etc. Secondly, I added a 64GB USB 3.0 thumbnail drive (bought on Amazon) for twenty-five quid + a 64 GB micro SDXC memory card (also from Amazon for thirty-five quid) so I've E-X-P-A-N-D-E-D my device storage capacity greater than any available iOS7 device! Next I purchased a back-lit Type Cover 2, so I now have essentially 2 devices in 1 - a fully functional high capacity notebook running the full version of MS Office 2013 for free (yes, no Office 365 or monthly subscriptions like on the iPad), plus a great tablet that plays superb games like Asphalt 8 Airborne & Halo Assault etc.

Having Outlook for email accounts is brilliant. Being able to split my screen in 2 and spawn IE11 browser and use Wikipedia whilst I still have an ebook open or a Word document is hugely productive. Being able to use Task Manager & File Explorer (even on RT version of Windows 8.1) is quick and dirty for getting my device running smoothly. The Microsoft Cloud (called OneDrive now) is terrific for updating daily spreadsheets and keeping them in one place, but the USB 3.0 port allows me to move multiple files from my PC or Laptop to my surface very very rapidly. Plus I sometimes plug my Logitech Performance Laser mouse (from my laptop) into my Surface 2 and it is so fast and accurate, especially multitasking. Not to mention productivity tools like One Note which is just made for the Surface and you have 2 versions to choose from: (1) Metro App (great without a keyboard attached) and the (2) desktop version that comes free along with Excel, Word, Outlook & PowerPoint.

Very well engineered; very functional.
It depends whether you get on with the Windows RT OS of course - personally, it suits me fine. It still has a more limited range of apps than Android or Apple, but enough (& good enough) for most needs.
Having good connectivity - full-size USB, SD micro, and reliable Wi-Fi - is a big plus.
I'm very glad I got the 64GB model though - it's surprising how much of the memory is already used up by the operating system.

Positives:

This is a great device, think of it a 'two in one', it's a tablet and it's a desktop. As someone that has always worked with MS Office on a desktop I can't get on with tablets, but this one enables me to have the best of both. I mainly use it for e-mails (I don't use Outlook, I use Yahoo on a web page) and it's great to use proper webpages without resorting to unreliable apps. It's easy to flick over from the desktop to the tablet. I bought the keyboard too as I'm a touch typist who doesn't like tapping on the screen.

Negatives:

What they don't tell you is that if it arrives uncharged, you have to charge it up and let it do its updates before it will let you do anything. It then kept asking me to create a Microsoft account, but gave me an error message which prevented me doing so. I checked the error message online (on my PC) and it turns out you have to manually set the date and time before it will let you create an account. If only this information popped up on the screen it would have saved me a lot of time and stress. However, now it's all okay and working fine. It also doesn't tell you how to switch it off, so you right click on the windows icon in the bottom left of the screen to choose shut down. I was wanting to left click like on my PC.

Overall:

I would recommend this product if, like me, you are not too keen on tablets but want the facilities a desktop and MS Office offer. If you are used to a 'proper' keyboard, you need to tap a little slower on this keyboard until you get used to it.

The surface 2 is just a fantastic tablet, windows is really nice to use, all the gesture controls work perfectly ( I haven't touched my I pad since I got my surface, it feels so old fashioned I really prefer windows 8 to OS7 ).It has a lovely screen nice and slick performance loads of good quality apps ( the quality of apps is the most important thing not how many,) Plenty of memory and the touch type keyboard is excellent.
Internet explorer is great and you can use the desktop for Spotify for example.Multitasking is well implemented you can have two different windows open and running on the same screen .This is a really great tablet I can't recommend it highly enough
