As is often the case in these plastic days, this product is born of a triumph of style over substance. Tell everyone it's on trend often enough and they'll start to believe that they're on trend by buying it.
There's little right or wrong about Haig Club Single Grain - it's so insipid that it can cause no offense unless 'characterless' offends - it is bubble-gum pop in a world of Mozart and Metallica.
There is one major flaw. The price. To put a mass-produced product such as this in the same price bracket as, for instance, Cardhu 15 or Glen Moray 16, is not a joke - it's a con. More fool the 'on trend' buyer who sees a footballer's name and a blue bottle and doesn't bother to investigate the gems all around it...

I should add that I have never purchased this, merely been bought a double in a bar. When offered another, I declined...

Quite simply they have taken the cheapest Whisky that can be found, dressed it up in fancy packaging, with an uber cool marketing campaign and celebrity endorsements! You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter! Most budget supermarkets will offer far superior grain whiskey for a 3rd of the price!

If you were looking for a gift for a whisky loving spouse or relative and happened across this product, with its flash bottle and celebrity endorsement, you might be tempted to think there was a premium product inside. Please allow me to disavow you of this assumption.

To understand the quality and value of grain whisky you must compare it with malt whisky and the differences are straightforward. Malt whisky may only be produced from malted barley and there is artisan skill applied in the processes of malting, mashing, fermenting and distilling (normally twice through bespoke copper pot stills). By contrast grain whisky can be mass produced from any old unmalted grain in distilleries that resemble oil refineries. The distillation through industrial column stills produces a very consistent product but one with much less character. Consequently, although the biggest influence upon both malt and grain whiskies is the casks in which they are matured, the flavours of the actual spirit of malt whisky will shine through to a much greater extent than with grain whisky.

In summary, grain whisky costs considerably less to produce and has little character of its own. It is usually therefore used by producers as a cheap bulker for making blended Scotch (normally 70% grain, 30% malt). Another point worth making is that better whiskies were historically denoted by an age statement, certainly in this price bracket. Haig Club bears no age statement so the youngest spirit in it could be but three years old. For the same money you can buy quality 15 or 16 year old malt whiskies and, if your giftee really loves whisky, they will appreciate that a lot more than a pale, neutral spirit in a fancy blue bottle.

I bought a bottle of this on a lightning deal at what to be honest is probably the true value price of this whisky. I had read all the reviews with much interest and to say those views were mixed is no understatement. Aficionados of whisky mostly loathed it and occasional drinkers tended to like it. I am more a Bourbon drinker than a whisky drinker abut usually have a bottle of malt on the go too so although far from being a buff I do have a working knowledge of spirits of this nature. For what it is this is fine. The packaging is lovely and so it makes a great gift and I suspect as a drink it is aimed at the celebration market rather than the nightly dram market. Taste wise it is very neutral smooth and easy which is another way of saying that (especially with ice) it doesn't actually taste of much, and this is the main point for and against it. Whisky fans love searching out background flavours such as oil and leather and popcorn etc but those joys for some can be a turn off for others. If you want a nice clean tasting drink with a group of friends over a card table or want to buy something for Dad who only ever buys Tesco own label whisky which he then smothers in soda and ice then you are on to a winner.. This is most definitely not for the whisky drinker who can tell the region of the whisky just by smelling it though for him this drink has nothing to offer but disappointment. I would also say that it would probably appeal to vodka drinkers who want to try something different too.

This all style over substance and nothing more han a marketing ploy.
Firstly, having been very interested in scottish whisky for a number of years I have never heard of either David Beckham or Simon Fuller being involved in the industry in any shape or form.
And yet they seem to have had an "input" to this newly developed whisky.
I ask - what actual input - other than their name being put to it ?
Secondly - for a grain whisky of no age the price is extortionate - you can get a much better grain whisky for almost half the price.
Try a bottle of Cameronbridge from the same maker for around £24.
But then Beckham and Fuller need to get their "cut", hence the vastly inflated price.

Finally, why "present" the bottle as if its aftershave!.....again, clever (?) marketing perhaps?

I suggest a serious whisky drinker would not touch this unless they were given it free.
