I have to say, I’m always very wary of Vine reviews, simply because the product being reviewed has been given to the reviewer rather than that reviewer actively looking for such a product. Before I bought my Neato I read these Vine reviews and rather they help, they complicated my buying decision.

I however BOUGHT my Neato Connected. It’s the most expensive Neato in the range and a decision I made as an ex-Roomba owner looking for a replacement. I ponied up the cash and I’m glad I did.

My Roomba 770 died due to water ingress. I then learnt a few truths about my Roomba, including how the water protection doesn’t work, how nearly all Roomba’s that get wet fail in the same way and how when I opened up the Roomba I found it was constructed for profit rather than quality.

All this lead me to Neato. A much smaller, Roomba wannabe company, that actually pulls off something significantly better. As I unboxed this vacuum I could clearly see they’d looked at all the bad points on a Roomba and improved it.

Even tiny details, such as the slightly larger dock were done better. Large dock bars and an integrated power supply with cable guide, rather than the two-piece affair from iRobot with all its wire clutter.

All Neatos are built with game changing LDAR (laser radar) technology and a room mapping technology called SLAM. Does it work? Hell yeah. I’ve watched my Neato guide itself through three rooms without touching anything back to its docking station. That same technology works in the dark, determines whether it will get stuck under a piece of furniture, makes it hit objects a whole heap less than a Roomba and also (critically) means the rooms are vacuumed like a sane person rather than a drunk weasel.

So what’s the result?

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I'm something of a fan of robotic vacuum cleaners following my purchase of a iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner about 10 years ago when they were only available in the US and the robot filled my suitcase on my way back from Chicago. Early Roomba's tended to be a little unreliable and I think I personally imported two or three versions from the US. Now Roomba's are available in the UK and I've stuck with them including iRobot ROOMBA880 Vacuum Cleaning Robot which is the latest UK model. So as a Roomba fan I was keen to try the Neato robot.

There are some significant differences between the Roomba and Neato robots. Roomba's are round not D shaped and they follow a fairly random cleaning pattern in a room being cleaned covering the same area multiple times. Cleaning a room can take half an hour - not a problem as it's a robot. The Neato uses different technology. It uses laser scanning technology to map out the room dimensions and then follows a regular cleaning pattern to vacuum the room - it's moves a bit like someone mowing a lawn who wants classic stripes in the grass.

There are several advantages to this approach. Because the Neato covers the floor only once it is far faster than a Roomba. This latest model has very powerful suction which means a single pass is sufficient for picking up most dirt. The latest Which? review of robotic vacuums suggests that the Neato picks up dirt better, but only just, compared to a Roomba. Also Neato should cover all areas of the room in theory.

We had wanted a robot vacuum for forever, and the imminent release of the D3 and D5 had caused a decent price drop - we grabbed it at £440, but I see it's back up at £549.

Our Neato Botvac Connected is called e-Nid. She has LIDAR, our robot obsessed boys love her, and think of her as a little Google car.

She is brilliant. Genuinely amazed at her navigation abilities, and her foibles are endearing - she has a little wander to plan her activities, then methodically cleans the rooms she's scanned. She takes about 45m to clean our downstairs, and sends a notification when she's done. House is cleaner than when my mother in law stays.

If I had the temperament, there would be all sorts of clever hacking to be done, but I don't. Hopefully there will be Google Home or IFTTT integration in the future. As it is, we're manually triggering a clean through the app when we leave the house, and have scheduled cleaning when the boys are in bed. We've connected the app to our Garmin smart watches, so if she needs her brush cleaning, or gets caught up on a cable, we don't miss a notification.

We've found that, as per the manual, if you watch, you can make little adjustments that means more of the house is readily accessible. Our house is very cluttered, and the boys and I are blind to mess. Moving a box here, a music stand and a chair there... Now she's cleaning under our 11 year olds bed. The amount of hair and dust is astonishing, given we'd already got a Miele vacuum that was used regularly. The difference is that now we trigger the Neato when we leave the house and it's scheduled for when the boys are going to bed - in eco mode is quiet enough that it doesn't disturb them. It feels like we're on top of things as opposed to being miserable cleaning on Saturdays.
