While visually attractive and of seemingly high quality, the toaster slots are not sufficiently deep to toast the top of even slightly oversized bread slices. This requires turning over the slice and retoasting. But by looking at the construction of the toaster, it appears that there is more than enough room to have the bread slices lowered further into the slots.
Also the hidden element "mica board" toasting design, while giving noticeably more even results, tends to dry out the toast more than conventional open-element designs.
What we find rather ironic is that Mr. Ramsay's reputation for quality and things that work correctly, I am wondering why or how he would lend his name to such an obviously flawed appliance.
Even laying a 'standard' slice of Hovis (12cms x 10cms) on its side, the toasted surface leaves 2cms untoasted along the top edge - hardly 'ideal' for this size of bread!
The only slice which would toast fully is one only 8cms wide. I don't think these are generally available and in any case negates the claim of "ideal for all types of bread"!
The 'one-slot' feature of the machine was a definite encouragement to buying this toaster, but in use it produces a slice of toast which is normally toasted on one side but hardly cooked at all on the other - yet another reason why this toaster falls short.
I had wanted to speak to the suppliers about this and to arrange a refund. Direct contact with them was not possible as the telephone number on their 'profile' page was unavailable. Sending an e-mail via Amazon was unsatisfactory as none of my stated concerns were addressed - merely some comments about them having difficulties with a change to their 'telephony' suppliers. The telephone number on their page remains the same, however!!
I really wanted to return this item but adding up the costs for post and packing together with the levy of an ILLEGAL 20% restocking charge meant that the refundable amount was not worth the time involved.
I wish now that I had heeded previous reviewers negative findings - they are all totally justified - and I shall now dump this toaster on the local tip and put the whole thing down to experience whilst resolving never to buy from Pembroke Dock Hardware again.
A call to customer service at Russell Hobbs has produced a toaster with the correct depths of slots to suit my requirements. Oh,well...we live and learn.
Design - very good, if you love chrome and solid look
Engineering - good, with some questions to be answered
Building materials - not bad at all, but apparently not all of them
Quality of built - good, with some reserves
OVERALL CONCLUSION - It's OK
Crumb tray does not stay closed right out of the box! Since this is not an issue, which affects functions - I did not retun it back outright. All other things work as they should. Perhaps because of this new type heating element - crust is diffuse and even without darker spots as it is, when done with traditional heating element. Looks good! But - the bread gets dry before it get toasted! I tried with several types of bread and result was quiet similar. I am not and engineer and do not know if the heating element is the reason for that, but fact that Krups, Tefal, Breville etc. still use the standard one probably means, that they already tried, figured it out and in the end did not go with it.Read more ›
