Product description

Product Description

With this world premiere recording, the Vienna Philharmonic offers new perspectives on the most visionary voice of Nordic music and one of the greatest symphonists of our time, Danish composer Per Nørgård (b. 1932). Conducted on this occasion by Finnish Sakari Oramo, these performances of Nørgård's Symphonies 1 and 8 two milestones composed with almost six decades between them are the legendary orchestra's first recording of new Nordic music.

"No other living symphonist could have reaffirmed the genre's age-old principles by so purposefully reinventing them." International Record Review

""If the music of today is to have any tomorrow, Nørgård will surely be part of it." Gramophone

To be honest I need to listen to this some more; however I preferred it to my other Norgard recording and the fact that the VPO are playing it is rather fascinating - a bit like Karajan in charge of Schoenberg.

Elemental music, full of the spirit of Sibelius. You need to play the 1st Symphony several times just to appreciate its depth of thought.

The likelihood of my buying this cd of Nordic Noir Music-VERY Noir-had it not been for the involvement of the VPO was nil, but having received the e-mail from them as a "Friend", I was intrigued. I had not heard any music by Norgard-(I can't be asked to insert the symbols in the spelling)- and in truth I had little interest in so doing as I imagined that his style was far away removed from the music I love and normally play.
I can assert that I was wrong on all counts. The music in both works is fascinating, colourful and vibrant and it is a cd I now treasure.

I will not pretend to be any kind of authority on Norgard-I know that he was influenced by Sibelius in his youth and by the more austere composers of the late 20th Century in later life, and in the symphonies recorded here this is very evident.
The First has assonances with Sibelius, Neilsen, Stenhammar, Shostakovich and even RVW!
It is a largely tonal whirl of vibrant musical ideas which do not ever quite come to full fruition, but hint that a great melody is about to explode, which it never quite does.
The First Symphony from the 1950s -"The Austere"- is anything but, with a huge orchestra indulging in virtuosic pyrotechnics. There is a brooding and dark second movement to be sure, but this work is less austere than the later Eighth, which the learned notes inform us is witty and playful.
I'll have to take the author's word for that!

The Eighth, written only a few years ago, is largely atonal, with fragmented phrases heavily influenced by the Orchestral Works of Berg and Webern. There are some spectacular moments interspersed with some very dark ones in a rather disparate structure. I suppose I can detect some wry humour, but it is in fact more "austere" than the vibrant First.

These are very fine performances, of very interesting and sometimes demanding works. Sakari Oramo, is the real
hero - a conductor who can actually make the VPO sound like a central European band - gone is the usual creamy
Viennese sound - and very well they play for him too.

The eighth symphony seems the most approachable at first listening - but as with all contemporary scores you need to
persevere and listen a few times to fully appreciate what the composer in conveying to the listener.

Superb sound and sensationally well conducted and played. If you want to buy just one disc of newer music this year
buy this one - listen in and it is a very rewarding experience.

I challenge any musician to purchase this CD. Listen to Norgard's 8th, then purchase Peter Boyer's Symphony No 1. Written just a year apart from each other. It's chalk and cheese, but which is more enjoyable? I enjoyed both works but for different reasons. However, the overall result is a no-brainer.
Brilliant performances of both Norgard works by the Vienna Philharmonic on this disc.
