i really wasn't impressed with this NAS drive, I already own a ds415+ and wanted to use this just for a picture backup of the main unit and run a further 2 ip camera's as 2 licences are included.
I installed a 1tb samsung SSD drive however the speed of this unit was dreadful, very slow at opening apps and running any backups
this was connected to a 1gb ethernet switch and proved no network issues but performing various speed tests on the same lan connection.
in the end i sent this back and swapped for a ds116 which i am over the moon with
This unit may be ok if your just using to backup pictures and watch movies from your PC but really didn't meet my requirements as a backup unit and running a further 2 ip cameras

Great, easy to set up NAS box that looks really nice and is silent in operation. Once it picked up a DHCP address I then installed the appropriate Mac software. Once complete you will have a nice shiny web front end to do endless configuration should you wish to. Plenty of apps for providing a media player (music, videos and photos) though I'm only using this as a basic storage server linked to my Raspberry Pi which is handling all my media player requirements.

I'm only using a 256GB SSD drive with this box so, to clarify for others who may wish to use similar, SSD drive's will plug straight in like a normal 3.5 HDD. I bought an adaptor kit to house it but this won't work as it throws the drive connections out of line. The SATA and power connectors will hold the drive in place and one of the rails will also allow the drive to rest on it. Unless you are planning to carry the unit about this is fine as SSD's are very light and won't cause strain on the connectors. You could always use a little blob of blue tack to pin the drive more securely.

I purchased this primarily to use to monitor my 2 Foscam IP camera's. using Surveillance Station (Free Download) it works absolutely perfectly, and add so much more functionality that the official Foscam software.
I would agree with the other reviewers that it is slow to read /write but the sheer amount of functionality this Nas offers is astounding for the price. I had a spare 1TB drive from Seagate and just slotted it in, went to the homepage and it took me through setup which took around 30 mins.
I would probably describe it as a 'bit technical' to use so may not be for all, but if this doesn't put you off, there is lots of help and guidance both on the Synology Website and external sites, the sheer number of configuration options is astounding.
If you just want a fast access plug and play Nas, there are better ones on the market, but if the write speeds don't matter to you, you will love this Nas.

I've had my Synology DS115j NAS for over a year now and I can honestly say that it hasn't given me a moment's trouble. I bought it as a bare unit and self installed a 4TB Hitachi drive ordered at the same time. Installation was trivial and took all of 5 minutes. Once installed and connected to my network I was quickly able to log in and set up four user accounts and grant 250MB of storage to each user. The only tricky bit was setting up the rights so that each user can only see their own 'home' directory. Once all of this was done and I'd installed a selection of the apps the unit's quietly gone about its business ever since. It has auto-updated with new software versions on numerous occasions but these have always gone smoothly: if it wasn't for the fact that I can see it's happened in the logs, I wouldn't have known that it had done it on most occasions. I also use the Android smart phone apps which are well featured and frequently updated. These allow you to connect remotely to the NAS over the web and I quite often use this functionality to browse photos or to stream music from my own collection over wifi while at work.

Downsides:
As pointed out elsewhere, the GUI can be slow to respond at times and the CPU does max out quite frequently when using some of the apps from the browser but for the price paid, this is perfectly acceptable. When backing up my digital photo archive a few months ago (around 1.2TB) I seem to recall that it took around 10 hours to complete this operation. This unit (obviously?) only holds a single disk drive (USB2 expansion excepted), which creates a single point of failure, but this was a cost compromise I was willing to make at the time to allow me to buy more storage.

I'm planning to upgrade my network with a managed switch shortly so I'll also be looking for another, more capable NAS. I won't hesitate to buy another Synology box.

What a great bit of kit. I've bought several entry level NAS before, the type that came with a fixed/built-in hard disk, and I have been always been let down by how slow, noisy and unmanagable they were.
I wanted a new NAS for everyday use, not for super-important backups (I have a slow old RAID solution for that, and have collected endless USB extreral drives over the years) but my previous everyday NAS was choppy when trying to serve media to my home network. So I spent that little extra than I normally budget for such devices and got a single-disk Synology. Well I'm glad I did. I dropped a 4Tb disk into this and six screws later it was up and running. Setup/configuration was easy and the mamagement dashboard is intuitive and feature rich.
The device hyberantes the disk when inactive, as you would expect, so the unit is pretty much silent when inactive. A word of warning, the quality of the hard disk you choose to install will affect the noise level when operational. It you plan to keep it on a desk you will hear the disk whir up when it becomes active... a bit like you sometines hear your Sky+ box spin up to record a show if you have your TV off... but I am sort of used to such sounds being part of my environment.
In summary this device works perfectly as a local, always on, media streamer and a non-RAID backup server. I will defiantly buy Synology devices in future as my first choice for network storage.
