Drawbacks (if any) the screensize for some web pages and only one speaker, so a pair of reasonable headphones is a must.
I would recommend the following to use with this:
A decent pair of headphones or portable speakers, 2g memory upgrade,a small portable mouse,a portable DVD drive, and a small padded backpack or bag to keep it all in.
All in all very pleased with this and more than happy with Amazon for their pricing and quick delivery of it. If you want a low cost but decent spec'd netbook then this is it.
While I am not a big fan of MS Windows the little Samsung N130 netbook served me well. It's Samung's budget netbook. However, it comes with a fairly decent spec given the price. It is certainly enough to check your email on the go, do some web browsing, use Skype and create word documents - exactly the stuff I needed to do while travelling. I even managed to watch movies I had downloaded from iTunes. And if someone had nicked it the financial loss wouldn't have been enormous.
All in all, it does exactly what it is meant to do. I would not recommend it as your only laptop / computer given it's small screen and lack of speed. But for travelling it's excellent.
I use a Toshiba 15" Satellite laptop with an AMD Turion 64x2 CPU and 3gb RAM, using Vista Home premium normally, so the Samsung N130 seems really slooooow, even though I swapped the 1GB ram for one of the 2Gb's I had in the Toshiba, (I figured on 32bit Vista, it wouldn't miss a gig and the N130 would benefit).
That being said, it will hopefully do the job it was purchased for (ie a laptop in each country and this to 'shunt' between), but if you get one, try and get one with 2Gb, or buy or borrow an upgrade.
The keyboard, by very virtue of the physical size of the unit is small, particularly if you have larger fingers (like me). I don't touch type, but rather use one to two fingers on each hand. It's definitely harder to avoid typos on the N130.
The display is good and clear (I have to wear 'readers' these days, with everything but the 37" TV screen), so no problems there.
The battery life as shipped is phenominal - upto 6 hours.
The sound is pathetic!
Maybe mine is faulty, even but on FULL volume I have a struggle to hear the Windows sign on/off music.
Don't buy this for playing music. It's mono and as I say, a spider crawling across the ceiling in the room next door will swamp it.
It came with XP SP3, which after all the hassle with Vista, I thought I would like, - to date I'm not sure? - maybe I have got to like Vista?
In the USA they ship this with Windows 7, which is supposed to be better.
Overall it is a plain and simple 'workhorse', there are no snazzy chrome bits and a distinct absence of flashing blue lights.Read more ›
It is a bit on the slow side, compared to a full laptop, but fine for outlook, internet and general office stuff - I don't really use it for anything else. The keyboard is great, no problems at all with the very slightly reduced size, and it has a very positive feel to it. The screen is obviously small, but some prudent organisation of the desktop (like putting the main toolbar on the side rather than the bottom# can maximise space. Office 2007 also allows you to double click the tabs at the top and that three level bar disappears until you click the tab again - essential really to maximise space. Overall I have not found the small screen size an issue at all. The unit is very quiet too, the fan rarely needing to kick in, although it tends to be on all the time when plugged in. The sound is very tinny and quiet, but ok on headphones and the machine is fine for playing music and doing Skype.
I bought this model, which is lower spec'd than the N140, as it has a matt finish - I do not like the very shiny machines which show finger prints. This one has a matt screen as well as a matt case.Read more ›
