The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 (120mm) Macro lens: Splash and dust proof optic ideal for outdoor photography

Perfect for photographing the outdoor world and nature in all its glory

Macro enthusiasts who also happen to be outdoor photographers will love the creativity, flexibility and peace of mind reassurance offered by Olympus' new Micro Four Thirds system lens in the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8, which offers the 35mm equivalent of 120mm and comes with housing that is splash proof and dustproof into the bargain.

Making it perfect for photographing the outdoor world and nature in all its glory, the robust high-end macro lens features silent focusing and true life-size 1:1 magnification as close as 19mm. In fact it offers continuous focusing from this distance to infinity.

Whatever you shoot, the imaging potential of the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 macro lens impresses. For example it can deliver enchanting circular ‘bokeh' thanks to a 7-blade circular aperture diaphragm, features a practical Focus Limit switch, and thanks to virtually non existent spot flaring it suggests itself as a perfect companion to an Olympus OM-D camera or a digital PEN.

Great looks, great performance, world-class optical engineering

It goes without saying that in being an Olympus lens, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 is engineered to the highest standard and will delight anyone who expects only the very best, from keen amateur photographers owning Olympus PEN cameras to photo enthusiasts and semi professionals who have purchased a top-end Olympus OM-D E-M5.

Not just the performance but also the design of the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 is outstanding. This is one very handsome lens that with a filter diameter of 46mm, weighs a mere 185g.

Delivers image quality on a par with high-end Four Thirds cameras

Although a lens for compact Micro Four Thirds system cameras, the quality of the Olympus fixed aperture M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 is such that it delivers a performance on a par with what one might expect from a larger lens on a bigger Four Thirds system E-series camera. What's more, it does it at a much more affordable price.

At 19mm and 1:1 magnification, close ups of animals and plants come to life in spectacular fashion, with the lens maintaining high resolution and contrast edge to edge.

Don't forget too that the PEN and OM-D series' built-in compact dust reduction system, in the form of Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF), adds to the lens' performance by eliminating the particles that can otherwise intrude and attach themselves to the camera's sensor when swapping lenses. The SSWF is a transparent filter located between the camera's shutter and sensor.

Multi layer ZERO (ZUIKO Extra-low Reflection Optical) lens coating

To ensure optimum lens performance whatever the conditions, the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 comes with a special multi-layer lens coating which halves the effects of ghosting and flaring in bright light when compared to similar conventional coatings.

Robust, lightweight design, splash and dustproof, technologically sophisticated in every way

Worry about your subject rather than the lens; that's the peace of mind provided by the protected housing of the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8.

It further offers an internal focus system with floating lenses that is capable of producing equally high image quality when shooting macro, landscapes, portraits, and more, a display for a shooting distance and magnification, a fixed body length internal focus system with MSC mechanism and is technologically sophisticated in every way.

Focus dial to change focus range

Photographers can of course utilise the focus dial to easily change the possible focus range (0.19-0.4m or 0.19m-infinity or 0.4-infinity). On top of this a special display indicates the actual focus distance in order to provide the even more control over your shots. Plus there's the option of an automatic lens hood from among the available accessories, which can slide up and down to reduce flare and protect your lens.

Compatible with a host of accessories

The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm 1:2.8 macro lens is compatible with a host of dedicated Olympus accessories. These include the specialist macro RF-11 ring flash and TF-22 twin flashes (in combination with the optional FR-2 adaptor ring).

A cautionary note. I had to return the first of these lenses (Made in Vietnam) because of one large foreign object (white flake) and a fabric strand trapped under the rear lens element. This suggests wasn't assembled in a clean room and that standards aren't the same as when they were made in Japan.

I have been a fan of micro four thirds from the introduction of the E-P1 but somewhat disappointed with the camera and lens performance. Having progressed via E-P2 and now to the superb OM-D the need was to select some top quality prime lenses to justify my move from a Nikon D300 outfit to Olympus. The 60mm macro joins the excellent Panasonic 20mm f1.7 and the superb Olympus 45mm f1.8 and so far I am more than satisfied with the results. This focal length is ideal for equestrian photography, dressage etc. and using aperture priority provides the combination of speed and depth of field which I require and results in crisp, contrasty and dynamic pictures. The fast autofocus with the OM-D is fantastic and early results compare favourably with the Nikon and 105mm prime lens!
With my experience so far I would certainly recommend this lens as a quality product although it is relatively expensive and Olympus, as usual, do not include a lens hood or even a lens bag!

This lens is superb, the focal length is great, the IQ is outstanding and it has some really neat touches like the focus limiter and the 1:1 macro focus switch. I've used most of the FF equivalents (Nikon 105VR, Canon 100L IS, Tamron 90mm, etc) and the results from this lens are very similar, if you like Macro or are considering this for portraits stop thinking and start buying!

I enjoy macro photography and wanted a lens with a bit of flexibility, after reading many reviews I purchased the oly 60mm macro, I have used it mainly for macro, but have taken some nice landscape and family shots as we'll and the quality of the lens shows through with lovely sharp prints.

I was rather resigned to the probability that this lens might be of the equivalent build quality to the average Christmas cracker content, bearing in mind my disappointment with the Olympus M Zuiko 14 - 150 zoom lens build quality. How wrong I was!

It is VERY well constructed - albeit the high plastic content in the body construction. It is solid, reassuringly "hefty" in the hand (although not heavy) and very versatile; the macro function is very effective and the image quality potentially available from this lens, in the right hands, is phenomenal.

If macro is part of your repertoire, buy it!

UPDATE TO REVIEW:
I thought you might like to know how it's been after seven months with this lens now I'm really used to it. The answer is that I'm even more impressed. I upgraded my camera body to an E-M5 Mk II and this lens makes the most of the new 40MP high-res mode. The increase in detail is more than I expected in this mode and fantastic for macro work. But I use this lens for all kinds of things (not just macro) and the images it produces are always outstanding.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I chose this over the new and cheaper Panasonic 30mm macro because of its longer focal length, which has a few advantages. You don't have to get quite so close to your subject for one thing, which is handy when it's an insect that would be frightened away. And you're less likely to cast a shadow. Plus, when you use it as a normal lens, for portraits, it's a nice, long 120mm equivalent focal length.

But I'm using it mostly as a macro lens and it is superbly sharp, with lovely colour and good contrast. Out of focus areas are really beautifully rendered – nicer I think than my Olympus 45mm f/1.8. I had a Canon SLR and Canon 60mm macro before I switched to my Olympus Micro Four Thirds system. That was my favourite lens ever and I wasn't sure if this would be as good. Actually, I think it's better.

[August 2015 update: I've now used it 'in anger' at a classic car show and I was knocked out by the quality of the photos. It proved that this really is a multi-purpose lens, fabulous long shots of the cars and the ability to go really close on those lovely polished chrome details. Background blur is some of the nicest I've seen on a micro four thirds lens.

Amazing lens, ive mounted it on my Lumix G3 and the results are superb! The lens is fantasticly sharp and able to pick out the finest detail of any macro subject I have seen no Chromatic aberration what so ever in my photos and the wide aperture of f/2.8 lets you work in incredibly dark situations. The lens itself is very well made with a very smooth focus ring and a good body. Overall I have enjoyed using this lens and have taken some stunning shots with it.

Superb macro lens for Micro Four Thirds. I've previously used the superb 50mm f/2 Four Thirds lens with an MMF-3 adapter - this lens compares more than favourably and weighs considerably less than that combination. Auto-focusing is much faster and the lens has a very useful focus-limiting switch which prevents the long searching that one can often get with macro lenses. The 50mm is so good that I thought hard and long before making the move. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
