Product Description

Product Description

Following the success of his hugely acclaimed 2012 album, Standing At The Sky’s Edge, Richard Hawley will release his eighth studio album, Hollow Meadows on September 11th, via Parlophone Records.

Recorded at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studio in spring 2015, Hollow Meadows sees Hawley return to the classic, sophisticated songwriting and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place.

Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums Late Night Final and Lowedges, as well as touches of 2009’s Truelove’s Gutter (‘Nothing Like A Friend’) and Standing At The Sky’s Edge (‘Which Way’, ‘Welcome The Sun’).

I found myself nodding my head along to Hawley's latest offering - once again named after an area of his home city of Sheffield.

Hawley is a throwback to gentler times - his wonderful voice reminiscent of fifties crooners. I have seen Hawley live in concert and he truly connects with an audience. Hollow Meadows was recorded while the man was recovering from a slipped disc - not that the pain has put him off. There is almost a haunting naivity about many of the songs on this album

Here we have eleven beautiful tracks about relationships that provide his best album since Cole's Corner. Hawley has kept true to his beliefs that quiet tasteful music can be successful in its own right. There are many memorable hooks and choruses in this album, which at times veers slightly into country territory.

The thing about Hawley is his ability to relate to all ages and not just in his lyrics. Youngsters can admire the artistic feel of the music, mums and dads can relate to the sentiments and love that goes into the songs and grandparents can look back on the fifties and sixties when melody and catchy songs ruled.

Hawley is a one off. His albums, by and large, are full of haunting, slow paced songs and Hollow Meadows very much continues in that vein.

Not really a review, more a plea for all of you who enjoy good, tuneful music to go out and buy this terrific album. The good thing about it is that you could reasonably have this playing in the background as "dinner party music", and I mean that as a compliment, yet it also repays sitting in a darkened room with headphones on, sipping a single malt and really listening to the heartfelt lyrics, beautifully sung. A soothing and enjoyable masterpiece.

Nothing hollow about this album. In my opinion it is Hawley's best and is more balanced than previous albums such as 'Standing at the Sky's Edge' or even 'Truelove's Glitter'. Hollow Meadows feels like a 'proper' album, where each song complements the other. It has the rousing anthemic songs such as 'Heart of Oak' and 'Which Way' but has a lighter touch on gems such as 'The world looks down'. Richard's voice is perfect and the overall feel is reminiscent of Cole's Corner but with better tunes. I really love this new album because it has the melodies to match Hawley's crooning voice. It plays to his strengths, and ranks up there with or even surpasses 'Coles Corner' and 'Lady's Bridge'.
This is the kind of CD that makes you want to go on a long enough car journey to listen to it in its entirety. In the modern age of throw-away singles and one hit wonders it is refreshing to hear an album that holds together as more than just a collection of songs.
Top marks to Richard Hawley for producing a stellar album while riddled with back pain.

By Red on Black TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 11 Sept. 2015

On his last album "Standing on the Sky's Edge", Richard Hawley Sheffield's premier classic balladeer, aching lyricist and glorious singer-songwriter became a space rock cadet. It was all a little bit unexpected, but it worked and proved that he has many strings to his bow. On this new album, Hawley is back located in familiar territory with a much more soothing record which again his rooted in his home city. "Hollow Meadows" comprises 11 easy listening love songs with obvious echo's of his masterpiece "Coles Corner". Not that any song on the album quite reaches that standard although some come within shouting distance.

Opener "I still want you" is a lush and instantly accessible piece of pop serenading with Hawley's husky baritone instantly recognisable. Even better is the sweep of "The world looks down" a wistful lament underpinned with a lovely melody. "Serenade of Blue" rolls slowly as Hawley contemplates the heavens and stars, while "Nothing like a Friend" is underpinned by light orchestration and Hawley singing at his finest. It is a thing of joy and proof that as a balladeer there are not many artists who can touch him. Hawley himself has admitted that his favourite song on this record is "Sometimes I feel" a song which made him "spring-clean the way I thought" and a true romantic guilty pleasure. Other tracks worthy of inspection are the harder rocking "Heart of Oak" which echoes the best of the tracks on "Sky's Edge" and sees Hawley declaring "Your precious to me like Blake's poetry/I wish you well old heart of oak".

Richard Hawley is probably one of the most underrated artists that we have in the UK; great songwriter, great melodies and lyrics and superbly produced. A man who supports his own home town by recording all his music there, very talented, widely renowned within the music industry, could be said to be one of UK's music best kept secrets.

A welcome return of the wonderful richard hawley.....the album is more like a return to the music of Cole's corner which is no bad thing as personally I rate that as his best album....the vinyl comes in a lovely gatefold sleeve and has not been off the turntable since its day of release...great to have him back.
