The Briggs & Stratton engine is a reliable workhorse, our previous mower had a B&S engine and even after 10 years was still going strong, they are considered a by word when it comes down to petrol lawnmower engines. This one is more powerful than our old lawnmower which does help if the grass is slightly damp or on the longish side! I note that some people say the lawnmower doesn't come with oil, well i've never come across a mower that does. For those that want to know a good quality "10W-30" semi-synthetic oil is what you should be looking for although 10W-40 or even 5W-30 would be more than good enough. Be careful when you first fill the engine with oil and ensure you don't overfill, constantly check the dip stick every few pours. When the oil level is on the full side, pull the starter cable a few times WITHOUT PETROL IN, this will allow some of the oil to lubricate the engine prior to firing it up the first time. Standard unleaded petrol from a garage is all you need for fuel so for first time users simply take a jerry can and fill it up next time you fill your car. Prime the engine 5 times and then start the mower. It will chug and cough for a few seconds and probably misfire once or twice until the petrol and oil finds it's way into every place it should.Read more ›
First impressions were great, it was dead easy to assemble (you just have to fix the handle on to the body) & it looks really cool.
Fired up straight away & ran really well. Its surprisingly pokey if you hold the handle in all the way as it walks itself. Im used to using a hayter and its not as quick as this. (I don't know if thats a good or bad thing but I'm chuffed with it being quicker, get the job done quicker ha)
You can slow it down by easing off the handle but being a typical 23 year old male, I had to go all out.
It cut really well as you'd expect from a new mower, although on the very lowest setting it cut out a few times but my lawn was pretty wet tonight so hopefully thats why. I used it with both the bag & mulching plug and it cut out both times. Like I said, this doesn't worry me too much as I'm sure its user error.
As for the reviews I read prior to purchasing about the height of the cut, on the lowest setting I found it to be plenty short enough. If you went any lower you wouldn't have any grass left.
Build quality is spot on also.
All in all, very happy & highly recommendable.
I spent ages looking for the right mower and this looked perfect. Ordered and arrived quickly. It's a solid, good looking machine and I was initially very happy based on appearances. I started to notice problems I couldn't live with once I got it going. The engine wasn't quite right and was hunting, even after I'd given it a good chance to bed in by running it. I wouldn't let that put you off the machine as it is a good engine and I was just unlucky. I could have popped to the local Briggs support and I'm sure they would have had it sorted in minutes. The mower I replaced this with has the same engine and no problems at all.
The two things that were the main problems were:
- The height settings are terrible. Unless you're mowing very long grass, you won't use anything other than the lowest two settings. On the lowest, any unevenness in the lawn will have the frame hitting the ground. Even on that lowest setting, it wasn't cutting very short at all. BTW, I'm not one of those people who likes their grass cut too short! Basically, it wasn't fit for purpose. Others aren't saying that so maybe mine had a problem that's not the norm.
- The rear driven wheels locked all the time when you try to move backwards, with the engine running. Sometimes they would free off by wheeling forwards and then going back but not every time. This was a complete pain! I don't use the drive and tried to work out what the problem was but couldn't easily. Another reviewer mentioned this issue but weren't too bothered about it. I couldn't live with it.
Maybe I was unlucky and was sent a lemon but it had to be returned. It has many good features and looks like it'll last but the issues above were too much for me.

I have not had it long, but it seems very robust (especially with the big wheels) with plenty of power. Fitting the handles took a little working out though.Published 13 months ago by Amazon Customer
