At first I did think that Lead Belly's Western Plains was a bit odd with the lyric, Essex singing about Cowboys but it is damn good despite the "yippee yippee yay". 'He Aint give you none', wow! Brilliant.
Get the album and listen to a really nice, down to earth guy, play simple unadorned R&B.
On bass is Norman Watt-Roy. A better bass player you cant find. Blockheads and Wilko.
This is Wilko.
'Red Hot Rocking Blues' opens, then we eventually get to 'He Ain't Give You None' via some pleasant surprises. This is where the surprises really begin. This is soulful music. Beautiful in its stripped down, raw, naked recording. The joyous romp through 'Hello Josephine' stops abruptly again with 'Help Me'. You really do wanna help him.
Fun through to 'One Time'. This instrumental builds, layer by layer. Norms playing here is exquisite, weaving in around the timings of the guitar and drums. Wilko and Monti combining with Norm to build a soundscape divine.
Who knew?. A nice romp through to 'Listen To The Lion' and then as the song starts...
Wow. -TWO- guitar tracks. The nagging, insistent, menacing almost, undertone of the second guitar with the bite of the lead and vocals so open, raw and exposed. This is stripped down, plaintive music. Music for the soul. World class.
My copy then goes on to the stompalong of 'Sandpaper Blues' to finish on an upbeat note.
Raw Wilko. Like raw steak, an acquired taste, but the heat of these Red Hot Rocking Blues is truly searing.
