I never got round to returning so I donated these to a friend as they wanted to establish if they would work in their house as a test - if they would function then they would buy some others that did not drop out as these constantly did in my house.
Six months on and they have never dropped out once (according to their son who uses them to connect his Xbox in bedroom to router downstairs) so it seems as though the issue might be the combination of my router/system rather than the units themselves. Hence why so many other purchasers have no problem at all.
I brought them home again for a quick test and still drops out in my house but not at theirs so have let my friend keep them as no use to me.
Unfortunately another example of dropping out randomly, does not matter if the connection is active or not.
Happens when paired together with nothing else on the network and also individually when I paired one at a time with a new ZyXEL PLA4225 I purchased after reading poor reviews to replace these.
I really need the multi port output for all my devices in my home cinema but the unreliability of these means they are being returned and I will go with another make.
The adapters are small, smart and don't run too hot. The Ethernet ports are only the 100Mbps variety, a type of hardware the makers of Powerline adapters still seem to be overly fond of. An application for administering them comes in a Mac version, which is always welcome.
Overall, the kit is very good if you want to connect multiple wired devices and don't need AC pass-through sockets. Gigabit Ethernet ports would have been nice, though this probably would have resulted in an increase in price.
In the box is a pair of adapters, a 2m Ethernet cable for each - you will need to purchase additional cables for the extra devices - instructions and a mini-CD which not all will need. Unlike the older, original product that operated at 150KBs, this now offers a better than three-fold increase to 500MBs connectivity and the ability to connect up to three devices to a single adapter without needing any additional hardware.
Use is simple; choose one device - they are identical - and connect to your router with one of the Ethernet cables and insert into power socket. Repeat for the other but connect a remote device (TV, PVR, games console etc). Press the button on the receiver unit to pair and you are then in business.
Although I have only needed to use it once or twice at the most since my original purchase of several kits and add-ons, TP-Link provide an excellent UK-based telphone support service should you need it. However, as the adapters usually work as intended and continue to function year upon year without any additional attention, you may never need to use that support.
Reasonably priced and always reliable, they are recommended.
What I liked about these units was the quick plug and play installation process and the bandwidth was sufficient to use on my sky box for downloading and streaming movies.
Such a shame they failed. Need to look for a better alternative or hardwire the connection somehow.
