I have an Anker mini-speaker Anker Ultra Portable Pocket Size Mini Wireless Bluetooth Speaker (12 Hour Playtime, NFC Compatibility, Passive Subwoofer) for Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops, PC and All Bluetooth Devices. which is pretty decent, but this beats it hands down.
The box comes with the speaker itself and a short USB cable to charge with, this can be connected to a USB port on a computer/laptop or to a USB charger.
Connecting it to my Samsung Galaxy S5 is easy enough, turn on bluetooth and select from the list of devices which appears, and they are paired. You get an audible chime from the speaker when you turn it on, as well as when it pairs with the phone, so you know it is working.
The speaker itself has a few buttons on it; at the bottom the on/off switch. There are also volume up/down buttons and a play/pause button, which are on a rubber type band at the bottom part of the speaker (check the item pictures). The volume control on the speaker is independent from the sound on your device. The pause/play button controls the device itself.
The added touch I like with this, is that if you get an incoming call, you can press the play button on the speaker to answer it (with the call being output through the speakers) or you can hold down the play button for three seconds, which diverts the call and continues the playback of music.
The battery life I found is around 4.5 hours; you might get a bit more/less life out of it depending on the conditions of use/ambient temperature etc. This is the only downside really, the Anker has a battery life closer to 11 hours. If the makers improved the battery life, this would get 5 stars.
To begin with it connected straight away to my iPhone (and provided an uninterrupted signal up to approximately 20 feet away).
Audio-wise there will always be compromises with a speaker this size, but it was at least on a par (or perhaps even better) than the popular Mini X2 series (which I have also). It would be perfectly suited to a small room (or to take on holiday) but not suited to outdoor use (it would simply not be loud enough). The speaker – from the range of music I tried it with –was more suited to acoustic/jazz as it simply doesn’t have the grunt to handle rock at high volumes (where it can distort).
The difference between Bluetooth and direct (aux)input audio reproduction and volume is very noticeable (the latter being probably twice the volume of the former at maximum volume setting and with a perceptively more detailed sound). On the downside however, the speaker cannot really cope with the volume and distorts terribly. But, provided you keep it within its manageable limits, it sounds fine (and I would recommend you use the speaker via the aux option if not inconvenient).
There are a couple of niggles. Firstly the USB to PC charger is separate to the speaker (and cannot be stored in or on the speaker housing itself – which is a shame as that would have been a neater solution and prevents it from getting lost when not in use). The other is that it does not come supplied with a 3.5 ml aux jack (and again there’s nowhere for this to be stored anyway).
To conclude: this is nicely designed and versatile little speaker with decent sound (given its size and price-point). Recommended.
To sum up then, with an interesting design, inexpensive price, and the capability to combine a second Jam Plus to create a left/right stereo pair, the Jam Plus is a worthy budget Bluetooth speaker, and therefore worth considering.
Syncing with my phone was a doddle. The navigation controls work for PowerAmp, but not for Squeeze Commander, it would seem. But I can actually see the controls on my phone!
Its control sounds (power on, power off, max volume reached, sync'd) are power chords - a bit overblown! I feared they would make it impossible to use as a bedside speaker, say, I soon discovered that it doesn't make a corresponding din when it runs out of juice; it simply stops. It would have been nice to be able to have some indication of how much charge is left. On a couple of occasions I was surprised when it suddenly stopped, but this was usually after on-and-off use with no charges in-between; now I'm in the habit of recharging it after each use to keep it topped-up. The claimed playing time is "up to 5 hours" (better read as "no more than 5 hours"!) I've not had a chance yet to leave it playing for more than a couple of hours at a time. It seems to charge quite quickly, certainly less than 5 hours even from flat.
It can be quite loud, and for such a small speaker, certainly seems to pack quite a wallop, with a surprisingly good bass response. Sounds not bad to me. I noticed that the treble end of the speaker's output is quite directional - clearer directly over the speaker, but soon falling off as I move to the side. But it never sounds muffled. It's perfect for making weeding in the garden slightly more bearable!Read more ›
