Anyway, this card fits in the slot and case OK but I had to upgrade the power supply too in order to feed the beast. After some careful recabling I was relieved at no flash/bang on powering on. One happy teenager playing all games at 'ultra settings'. Will probably see him again in 12 months for next upgrade. Priceless.
The MSI logo lights up on the card too. Set it to breathing and watch it purr.
There are other companies that make the card, but MSI have always done right by me. You could get a gaming console for the price of the card, but you're here because you're a cut above those guys, and when you fire up your first game and set it up right it will feel like Christmas, or whatever holiday you celebrate.
I have done my research, made numerous similar priced comparisons (eg. RX480, GTX970, GTX1060) and thought long and hard between this 3GB and the 6GB version. Based on reviews done with both cards side by side, with less than 10% reported difference in performance and 25% difference in price, this is a no-brainer choice!
This is great for :
1. Gaming at 1080p with highest graphic quality settings. Limitations probably due to the 3GB memory for 4K gaming.
2. People who only use it mainly for one primary display as it has only a few ports.
3. Gamers that are not looking for blinking light shows or those with casings without windows.
4. Occasional gamers who will not be looking into SLI in the future by adding another similar card.
5. Overclocking maniacs who will not use it as it is simply because it can be faster.
6. Those who don't care about a missing metal backplate. This card runs cool even at overclock. So, it may not be required.
7. Future upgrades in a year or two without breaking the bank.
What I love about this card is that it overclocked reasonably well and remain stable at about 60 degrees C with the fan at less than 1900rpm or 55%. I have attached a screen shot of MSI Afterburner and MSI Kombuster 3 used for the stress test for your reference.
The performance is good enough for my old school, BF3, SCII, Crysis 2 and MGSV gaming at 1080 at ultra settings. I have no 4K monitor to test further but I'm happy with what I'm getting now and will start saving up for a future upgrade!
It would have easily received 5 stars from me (as it is near perfect), had it not been designed with a curious missing feature. The graphics card cannot be used with 0db ie. with the fans turned off at idle or at low temperatures. That means that your computer will generate more fan noise whenever it is in operation. Both fans spin at around 1500rpm minimum at 49%. There is no way to turn it off! Most other reasonably priced graphics cards have this feature built-in or can be software controlled. Those sensitive to noise, please be aware.
Based on the price alone, you can't really fault the shortcomings as you do receive a near perfect factory overclocked GTX1060 3GB card and have more than enough savings left for a good set of noise cancelling cans!
The only thing this card does struggle with is 4k. You'll get anything around 20-30 fps if you run certain gaming in 4k on this card. Otherwise if you dont care about 4k and you want to furture proof then this card is one of the top of the line ones out there and will last you.
Also keeps really cool and fans only kick in when needed so keeps noise to a minimum. Lights up on the side so looks good if you have a case with a window.
