On first installation had a bit of delay while waiting for automatic download of a couple of fairly substantial patches from Ubisoft but the game has so far proved absolutely stable and bug free. I am running it under Windows 7 with Nvidia Gforce 6800.
The game is typical of the Ubisoft range. Fans of other Anno and Settlers games will love it. Compared to some games it needs a good deal of micro managment but that's a matter of taste as some gamers prefer that degree of control and some prefer automanagement of minor issues. Very impressive graphics. Rather useless manual, but beginners should not worry too much as the easiest levels pretty much walk you through all the basic concepts, controls, etc. If you are looking for action or violence look elsewhere, and the simple bulding and trading can become a bit dull but the elements of diplomacy and some combat add breadth so overall well worth it.
Edit: patch 1.2 also just released!

Barring a few hiccups (ground textures not rendering - fixed in patch 1.1) installation and running the game went without a hitch on my Dell Xps (AMD phenomx4 + radeon 5670) very stable programme and runs smoothly with consistent frame rates, and is a very pretty game with the best looking water animation i think ive ever seen.
if i had to describe this game i would say if you started out with Sim City, added alot of charm and a gorgeous setting, add in some simple point an click combat mechanics, some more charm and a lot of micromanagement then you would get close to being Anno 1404.
Other than the addition of a single player campaign which is compelling and keeps you engaged, this also serves as a kind of on the fly tutorial for getting started, the game is basically one giant sandbox were you can control almost any aspect of a game imposing various winning conditions, whether pirates harass your trade ships etc. Its clever because its not the norm were you pick a map you like and off you go, it generates new maps using a 5 digit number which can be re-entered to play the same map twice if you like but every time you play it feels different - very nice touch.
This game does require a player with patience, the manual is about 5 pages long and mostly covers installation issues, and this game to a new comer is very complicated. for example, you need Wood Tools and Stone to build stuff initially, wood and stone are pretty straight forward, Lumberjack and stone mason buildings.. easy, but how do you get tools i was thinking ..Read more ›
The single player offering is without a doubt the BEST Anno offering so far. The gameplay is sometimes slightly derivative to 1701, but there are enough improvements that going back to it would be difficult.
Beautifully rendered, fantastic animation. Occaisonal fps drops but that might be down my PC or the old drivers I'm running.
A pointless security measure that sounds like a last minute rush job to compensate for the other major negative which would have been a far more reliable copyright security measure.
At the last moment multiplayer was completely removed. For most, including me this reduces the game down in size majorly. Bots can only achieve so much!
Personally I regret buying this title whilst it was £25 considering the multiplayer was removed, but this all comes down to preference. If you're looking for a solid single player experience then the custom games in Anno 1404 are the way to go. If like me you were expecting to LAN this with friends for some good 12 hour games, then prepare to be dissappointed until the expansion/patch comes out to appease the major part of the Anno fan base.
