Product description

Product Description

SteelSeries 4HD is a hard plastic composition specifically engineered for professional gamers who demand consistent precision, accuracy and stability. The finely textured surface consists of tens of thousands of light reflecting microscopic points, optimized to enhance the tracking capabilities of next-generation gaming mice. Thanks to the sophisticated tracking capabilities of the surface, the user is capable of performing exceptionally precise mouse operations, both in terms of minimal movements as well as high velocity "slingshots". This gaming surface was researched and developed in parallel with the SteelSeries Xai Laser and Kinzu Optical mice.

I was looking for a small to medium sized, hard surface mousemat, at a reasonable price and of decent quality. When those are your criteria, there are actually surprisingly few choices.

This mousemat has a textured, matt plastic surface that is bonded to a rubber backing. The surface works well with both roller-ball and laser mice, and I have found it durable and easy to clean. The rubber backing is sticky enough that it grips to surfaces very well and does not slide about during use.

My only criticism is the cost of this mousemat. It is decent quality, but I think it is overpriced for what is essentially a piece of plastic stuck to a piece of rubber. However, this hasn't stopped me buying two of these mousemats, as I cannot find the combination of features I am looking for anywhere else, at a lesser price.

In short, buy this if you don't find the price an obstacle. It is a decent quality, robust mousemat that gives a great response for both gaming and general activity and works with all mice I have tried with it.

EDIT: This has come down a lot in price since I first reviewed it. If it's below £15 when you are looking at it, then it's a good buy and would rate 4 stars for me.

Well, I'm not sure about rating this as a game - but obviously it's predominantly intended as a gaming mouse mat, so I gave it five stars as a game and rated it five overall.

I'm not a gamer, I spend most of my umpteen hours a day in front of the MacPro editing video but mouse mats have been something of a necessary evil - curling at the edges, skidding around on the desk, going shiny so the optical mouse doesn't work, dust and even dog hair getting embedded in it - all these things deter from the efficiency of the thing but worst of all, is constantly going over the edge of the mat, and accidentally dropping a bunch of files into the wrong folder - Grrrr.

Not any more. My partner bought me a 4HD Pro Gaming Mousepad because she was tired of hearing me complain about normal mats. Research on Amazon led her to this product and she went ahead and ordered it from Amazon's Jersey branch.

When it arrived, we duly cleaned the desktop and the mat appeared to 'glue' itself to the surface. Of course, it didn't really, it just felt solid.

I moved the Mac 'Magic Mouse' onto it, and my life changed a little bit. This was something new to me. I actually felt as though the cursor was a part of me - so precise is the movement, I feel I could actually paint with it (if I could paint at all, that is). Being slightly larger than the average mat means you have a better working area but you can also work right up to the edge of it and (maybe because it's hard) you seem to have a better feel for the edge and can avoid accidentally dropping files in the wrong place, and similar accidents.

Never mind gaming, if you want a mouse mat (sorry, pad) that stays put as though it's welded to the desk and which is incredibly precise, yet allows totally free movement of the mouse, this is for you.

It's rare that I give a product five stars but this one deserves six. I'd buy another if they were twice the price.

I bought my first a few years ago for home and I recently purchased my second one for work. Great mousepad. Nice and accurate and reasonably priced. Highly recommended. Also isn't too flashy like the Razer counterparts.

It's stupidly hard to find a hard mouse mat for less than £30. Unfortunately I wouldn't call this a "hard" mat, the proper term would be "stiff".

I bought it because I game in an armchair (due to space limitations) with the laptop on my lap and a mouse mat on the arm of the chair. Up until now I've had a solid plastic mat, about A4 letter sized, that we got at work as part of someone's marketing scheme. It was perfect but after a time the surface bubbled and broke, to the point it's so uneven the mouse wobbles and tracking is unreliable.

This mat doesn't really suit the purpose perfectly, I'm using the old mat under it to keep it flat, but moving the mouse has a beautiful glide and its grip on the surface below it is solid.

It's stupid actually. The type of mat I want you can get in bulk for about £0.80 but there's a £70 ordering fee. Tempting to open a shop as there seems to be a lot of people looking for a cheap, hard mat and zero supply for consumers.

Nice mouse mat. Low friction. It is sooo much better than using my mouse (SteelSeries Sensei) on carpet on the floor, especially as it is fairly rigid compared to foam mouse mats. I do not need a large mat, so it is ideal for me.

I've been looking for a mouse mat in the shops for a few weeks but they just sell the cheap material ones that last a couple months so I checked online. I am very glad I did.
This is an expensive mouse mat at £20 but it's worth every penny. I don't play games on my PC but I do a lot of image editing and web design and I can say without a doubt this is the best mouse may I have ever owned. The mouse seems to glide rather then needed pushed and the accuracy is incredible. If you're using a mouse everyday this will be a revolution for you. It might even help RSI as it's so easy to move the mouse around.
I'll be investing in more for my staff very soon.
