Which brings us to Killzone Shadow Fall. Let's get the most obvious thing out of the way first: This game is a dazzling graphics showcase. Sweet, sweet eye candy. Even some hardcore PC gamers are able to admit this. Out of all of the next gen games I've seen this year, this is the one that screams "NEXT GEN" the loudest. It doesn't run at 60fps all the time, but it sure seems close to it a lot of the time. It certainly runs at more than 30, no doubt about that.
The game play has changed, yet it still feels like Killzone to me. The pendulum has swung back from the "WW2 in teh future vs. the Space Nazis" and closer to the feel of the original Killzone. It's a futuristic cold war secret agent mission, where you're a one-man infiltration unit using some fancy gadgets. There are a few big battle set pieces where you're fighting along side a squad of allies, but they're few and far between. There are a few issues with the designers being typically stingy and thoughtless with checkpoints, and there's a particular section towards the end of the game that is one of the most frustrating sequences I've played through in many, many years. I have honest serious doubts that they even showed it to play testers, because if they had I simply cannot fathom how they could have approved it to be in the game.Read more ›
The game does have BOTS which is a god send in this day and age of constant focus of online.
The game is an excellent showcase for where the Killzone series could go (1st campaign mission is just 10/10) however falls short of itself rather quickly.
The story involves Helghast being forced to live alongside Vektans on their home planet after the petrocide attack. It can devolve into a silly mish-mash of espionage at times, but the story is generally well presented and offers some surprising twists. Compared to previous KZ games the story is definately strong.
Gameplay wise it is definately a KZ game. It definately feels lighter than previous games, but thats because your a spy of sorts, not a simple heavy soldier on the ground. Guns feel weighty and powerful to shoot with lot of cool variations on well known weaponry. Multiple objectives are presented throughout levels, which definately creates much less of a linear feeling to the game.
Graphically Shadow Fall is the best looking game on any console to date. Textures and tessellation is superb making the planet of Vekta feel like a real, living world. Facial animation is spot on, showing some of the strongest Mo-Cap this side of La Noir.
Multiplayer is strong featuring 3 unique classes, unlockable attachments and features. It's not quite as strong as KZ3's but it runs at a steady 60fps and features strong, community built matches.
Overall I love Killzone:SF. The story can devolve into occasionaly corny spy tale, but the gameplay is fun and fluid, graphics are amazing, the best to be seen on any console and multiplayer is fun classed based mayhem.
I think this game is being treated slightly unfairly because people forget that this is a PS4 launch title. I'm almost positive that while developing the game, the team was specifically told what was expected of them - a solid tech demo of the PS4 with a story tacked on to it. If you look at it that way, KZ: SF does the job, and it does it well. The game brilliantly shows off the PS4 and what it's capable of. I'm a single-player type of person so the campaign was all I played. I really loved the atmosphere, the setting, the graphics and even the tense music in some parts. The voice acting was so-so, however.
Now, if I look at this game from a KZ enthusiast's point of view, I can understand why it must have disappointed some people. Even for a newcomer, the story is pretty mediocre. It's forgettable and you can tell that there are some gaping holes in the plot. Additionally, I wasn't expecting the voice acting to be so dull.
Overall, as a launch title (which is how I viewed it), I give this game 4/5 stars.
Compared to other shooters from the previous gen (and I'm not talking about generic CoD and Battlefield stuff), it's 3/5.
