This is an Update. I had two whistles coming in bad condition, scratches etc.

I will not go in details, I will just say that this is not the fault of the manufacturer (Phil Hardy). I got one directly from them and it was PERFECT, and keep a note here, I first bought and then told them my experience here.

Anyway, this is a whistle from heaven. The build and sound can only be better what you expect. I have had whistles from other major brands and I would say anything else compared to a Chieftain looks like they went out in the world half done.

Invest your money, you will not regret it.

Have played this for a while now. It has a fantastic sound and it's comfortable to play when you first learn the grip. Compared to the "Dixon one piece low whistle" you have to blow just a tiny bit harder but in my opinion it sounds much nicer once you get used to it. It also made it easier to keep control of which octave I played. With this I mean that since I found that the air flows easier through the Dixon, it didn't take much to reach the higher octave (sometimes, without me wanting to).

I did a lot of searching around before i decided to buy this. There are a lot of low whistle comparisons on youtube which are very useful, but of course cannot convey everything about a whistle. I can't either, other than to give my opinion....which is subject to change because i've only had a few days with this. I do have a basis of comparison though because about four months ago i bought a Dixon low D.

Honestly at this point, i like the Dixon MUCH better. It has an incredible warm tone - very flute-like. it can be played quite softly. it reaches the second octave easily except the high B ... and that's probably just because of my inexperience. And it's physically warm. it never feels cold and hard.

The Chieftan, as i heard in one of the reviews, does need to be physically warmed up. with the Dixon i can just pick it up and start playing. With the chieftan, i need to hold it in my hands, sit on it, put it next to the fire or prepare it in some manner before using it.

I also know why some metal whistles come with plastic/composite fipples (mouthpiece). the aluminum mouthpiece always feels cold.

However, i have a feeling that i will get to like it as i use it. i've managed to get some very nice sounds from it and certainly it's received very good reviews in other sites, and there are a number of very good youtube demonstrations. the construction is also very nice. it looks good and has a nice solid feel(but cold!).

These are my initial reactions. I'm by no means an experienced player. But i think i would have appreciated seeing something like this before i bought it ... especially the bit about how cold it always feels.

High quality, low whistle. Very pleased. It would have been worth knowing that the low whistle is much more difficult to finger than a regular tin whistle, so there's a slight learning curve but I can't fault the instrument itself.

Love this instrument! It's so forgiving. As a beginner I was worried about keeping it together but it's fantastic. The sound is simply beautiful. The scalloped holes and closer spacing makes progressing so much easier. Stunning instrument. So glad I bought it.

As a beginner, I didn't expect to master the instrument quickly. After some practice, I could play even the low notes with a piper's grip. A durable and beautiful instrument.
