I decided to go for this Aukey charger due to its excellent value. It was much cheaper than the competition and still very powerful. I also found several chargers which had LEDs to indicate when they are on. I prefer this design, which excludes any lights, as you can use it in a bedroom and not get distracted by an LED at night.
This charger is 10A, which is crucial. It means that you can get a pretty fast charge of 2A in each port if you are using all of them at the same time. Many chargers of this price point, or even more expensive, are only 5A. Whilst the underpowered chargers can charge fast if you are using fewer devices, this one is really powerful no matter how many devices you are charging.
I did not have any problems using this charger. As someone that receives a lot of products for review, this is really useful. I have used it to charge many devices, and had no problems in getting a really fast charge.
The size is a big part of a charger like this, as being able to use it for travel is really useful. I knew that this thing was small, but seeing it in person made me realise how small it really is. For comparison, I put an iPhone 5s on top of it. The width is almost identical - this thing is small. Whilst I am using it at home, this sort of product can be really useful for travel.Read more ›
When the new one arrived, I could see I hadn't been mistaken - the lead was only 75cm, way too short for what I needed. Fortunately I had a spare in my spares box, so I let that one pass. But be aware of this - it's not really long enough to be useful.
I tested the unit with a number of my devices (Nexus 7 (2012 model), Nexus 10, Moto G, Sony Xperia Z3) using a "Charger Doctor" gizmo that measures USB voltage and current, and discovered that it has one odd characteristic. With two of these devices (Nexus 10 and Moto G) all the ports behaved in the same way, delivering around 1.2A. But with the Nexus 7 and Sony, port 5 delivered only about half (less than 500mA) compared with ports 1-4. I have another charger that behaves in the same way (Black CE Certificated 5V/2A 2000mAh Universal Folding UK Adaptor Mains Phone Tablet Charger Dual USB Plug for Android Tablets Samsung Galaxy Note 4/3 S4 S5 S6 Apple iPhone 6 6 Plus 5S 4S 5C 5 4 iPad 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Mini iPad Air iPods Samsung Galaxy Tab...) - if you're interested in the detail, take a look at the review by A. Pearce and its comments.
Unfortunately, without measuring your particular device, you won't know if it behaves like this. So basically, to get the highest charging rate possible, don't use port 5 (the one at the bottom when stood upright).
After posing the below review and getting a reply from Aukey, I've contacted them and got very satisfied service from them. So the product had failed me, but 100% effort for Aukey customer service.
The Ai controller does not work well. Some previous reviews have also questioned the Ai controller.
I've a USB power reader and can confirm that the ports do not distribute power well. On the exact same port and same device the charger can change power output by 100% - from .8a - 1.6a
It is a very random hit or miss if your getting the maximum power output from a port. A previous review did state about lower power devices causing the issue. This seems somewhat true. If I plug a 2.1a drain device in after unplugging the whole charger, It will charge at around 1.8a, but if I then put in a low power phone and then the high power device, the out drops to about 0.8 (same as phone)
Also incredibly helpful when travelling, as this is the only wall charger that I need to bring with me.
Also love Aukey (and specifically this charger) for its value. It was not very expensive and this is the perfect price I would pay for this reliable product. There were a couple unknown brands I saw for cheaper, but I had not heard of them before and wouldnt trust them not to burst into flames, however after hearing about Aukey (via Youtube) and trying a couple of their products out, I have no trust issues with their brand.
