I have to say the criticism is true. About 35% of them have the pigment centre mis-alligned inside the pencil barrel. The embossed writing on the pencils are fuzzy, some pencils look a little tatty - not what you would expect for "Artist Quality" not to mention EXPENSIVE product. As other reviewers have mentioned this will cause breakages as they are sharpened. One thing to note is these are manufactured in Mexico - so maybe quality control isn't the best there? I have emailed prisma color directly (US company) to ask for their advise as I am a bit nervous about keeping them. I will update this comment when I hear from them. The only other verified stockist is "refuelled" a UK company but they are selling them for more than double the price on amazon (£210). I tried to call them to ask them where there pencils are manufactured and why are theirs so much more expensive. As soon as I get through to them I will update my comment again! UPDATE 08/06/2017 Still waiting for Sanford to answer my questions about quality...I can see they clearly DO NOT care about their customers and I have seen other people who say they do not respond, this really annoys me. All in all a bad experience...Please save your money and get some Faber Castell's instead! Also the company called "refuelled" after trying to call them 3/4 times a day over 2 days still no answer. Absolutely no excuse for businesses to treat customers in this manner.
Some of the pencils have scratches, the leads are off- centered and a few of them (black in particular) will not sharpen well at all. The lead cracks and breaks off and the wood splinters causing more damage to the pencil. Credit where credit's due, most of them perform very well and I can see why they are so popular. It's just a shame that Prismacolor doesn't take pride or care in manufacturing their colour pencils. It really is a gamble buying these so in future, I'll stick to Faber Castelle's Polychromos.
The negatives, I’ve got a fair few where the wood looks to be split either just at the end or right along, I will wait and see if this has effected the lead as I use them. Because the ends have no coating on them a fair few have chips in the lead at the ends, again I’m hoping this won’t have effected the rest of the pencil. The over all look of a fair few isn’t great for the price they cost.
