There's something satisfying with a well made piece of kit, my impressions of this mixer firmly puts it in the Well Made category, and as its name suggests, it does give a feel robustness. If you register your purchase you will get 3 years guarantee from Philips.

The body of the mixer is made from solid metal, non of the white plastic that is usual on cheaper alternatives. It feels weighty on the hand and is fairly quiet in use. It stands on its end as pictured like an iron, and its weighty body ensures it won't topple over easily.

In the box are two mixing attachments, one set is the beater as pictured, the other is a pair of dough hooks, and it is this that I tried out first by making some bread. I'd have to say it certainly beats kneeling the dough by hand.

After use, you simply lift up a lever which ejects the attachments into the sink, no messing around trying to pull them off by hand. Very good.

The only gripe I have is at this price, I would have like to see a decent storage box as this isn't something that can be left out on display without making the kitchen look untidy. A way to wrap the power cord around the unit like you do with an iron would have been nice too.

To conclude, the unit feels very well made, only time will tell if it lives up to the "robust" name, although the 3 years guarantee is gives the peace of mind needed to splash out on an product at the higher end of the price scales.

I had high hopes that this would be a great product like the Philips Robust Collection Juicer I recently got. I read in the advertising booklet, that accompanied the latter, that the Robust Mixer would give "Powerful mixing for the toughest recipes". However, when I read the Mixer's User's Manual I saw a list of maximum usage times for various mixes: for example "cake mixture" 3 minutes, " whisking 5 egg whites" 3 minutes and a recipe for a white loaf that advised that after 3 minutes of using the dough hooks "Let your mixer rest for 60 minutes". These advisory limits don't give the impression of an appliance capable of tackling the toughest recipes. I have cake recipes that require more than 3 minutes of whisking and from what I read I couldn't attempt to use it for a butter enriched dough, such as brioche, which requires far longer than 3 minutes of mixing.

I acknowledge that the appliance is capable of mixing larger quantities than less powerful hand-held mixers, but I don't feel that at about 6 times the price of my Kenwood 250 watt hand-held mixer it offers such a substantial advantage. To its credit the Robust Mixer looks very good, is obviously well-made, though this makes it very heavy, and I'm sure will last a long time provided you don't use it beyond its limits, but for me it doesn't offer enough of an advantage to be worth the price.

This is the first hand mixer I have owned so I cannot compare it to any cheaper models, but overall I am impressed with it.

It is a very nice looking piece of equipment, something you would perhaps like to show off when you have house guests. The mixer itself is simple to use. The whisks and dough hooks are easy to insert and there is a lever to release them after use. Changing the speed during use is also quite easy.

The recipes I have used the mixer for so far have been tackled effortlessly thanks to this product. My only gripe with the mixer is that it is a bit heavy, but I feel that this is simply down to it being a well made product. I am also not certain it is quite worth the price tag, I understand it does have several advantages over some other mixers as well as being a well made product, but for me it's just a good hand mixer with a large price tag.

This mixer feels like it is the business. It's big and heavy and it feels robust. While it works it is good but unfortunately the impression of sturdiness is somewhat undone by the fact that one of the grips for the whisks failed on our model after less than three years. This mixer cost more than £100 new which is about three times more than most of the rival products. I am happy to pay this sort of premium when it means increased longevity from a product. However the three years that this product lasted is probably no longer that your common or garden mixer would last, so what have I paid three times more for exactly.

On the subject of three years, the USP of the product was the three year warranty. Unfortunately according to Philips I did not register the product as they can find no evidence of my registration in their records consequently they will not honour the guarantee.

Then there is the business of Philips and their concept of customer service. I tried to contact someone in some position of importance in Philips to relay my disappointment with this product but Philips hides behind a useless e-mail complaint address. There does not seem to be any possibility of service or repair with this item. I know that lack of serviceability is an endemic problem in small electrical items but it seems a shame that this whole expensive mixer should become landfill for the want of one little plastic and metal retainer.

In fairness Philips have offerred us a voucher for an as yet unspecified amount to buy another Philips mixer. We are nonetheless reluctant to make another purchase of a Philips product after our disappointment.
