I bought these primarily for recording / mixing my music and they really do sound wonderful with excellent separation and clarity and they do the job admirably. I am no audiophile but I suspect they are very slightly on the warm side of the spectrum rather than being completely neutral. A top end (and much more expensive) set would probably give you a more honest and flatter response if this is what you need.

For me they sound perfect both for production and just listening to music. Well built, 3 cable options, durable.

Really excellent value.

Had these for about three weeks now, listening mainly to 320kbps tracks on Google music on a nexus 5x phone. I can totally see why people like these, the signature on these is very pleasant, sounding well with all musical genres. You can tell there's monitor heratige, but they've been slightly tuned for more modern tastes. Sound is clean, clear, confident and enjoyable, and at 32 ohms they're dead easy to drive. Any tracks I know of that were problematic with other cans or earbudes that I've owned, are all handled effortlessly by the m50x's.

On top of everything they fold neatly, and come with interchangeable cables for various scenarios. They're comfortable to wear, even for running. These are awesome cans for on the go, which is how I enjoy most of my listening. A mic would have been a deal-sealing addition here.

I'm no sound engineer, but I know what I expect in this price range, and the m50x's deliver well.

Alternatives? Had I been shopping for home use at this price range I might have looked at the beyerdynamic 770 pros. On the other hand, if I were buying cans that I wasn't going to take outside, I might up the budget and consider open backs.

These headphones were ordered to replace a rather aged pair of Sennheisers.

No disrespect to Sennheiser, as I do believe they make solid products, however once I put these Audio Technicas on, I immediately noticed a difference to my Senn. HD280 Pro headphones.

Absolutely nothing is lacking, and I'm glad I went with these from recommendations. These headphones make listening to music a treat, whether you're going for a nice soft jazz with a resonating bass, or a heavy punk with perfect clarity to pick out each instrument (as frantic as the play style is).
To put it short: You're not going to be missing out on anything with these.
HOWEVER... This means literally everything, including distortion. I've realised this is largely due to the track you're playing, basically if it's been recorded with distortion (such as very old music that hasn't been remastered, or cleaned up) you may hear that in the background with the same great clarity as everything else.
So one thing I would definitely recommend, with the above in mind, is these are for truly appreciating music, and in that sense it would be wise to use high quality files when using these.

Normal guy here (non-audiophile or expert) Never owned a decent pair of headphones before.
Bought these for £116 and have listened to a few hours of the likes of Foo Fighters and The White Buffalo after running heavy metal for a day to break them in a little.
Setup: Sony XPERIA
Topping NX2 Amp DAC
Lossless files only.

Wow am I impressed, I can hear everything with so much more clarity it feels like I'm stood next to the band recording, I used an equaliser on my phone and pre set it to the type of music I'm listening to, this makes a huge difference to enjoyability.

I recommend just stretching the headphone band as wide as it'll go (pretty much horizontal) a few times before you use them to reduce the clamping effect.

As a general consumer that is far from an expert: buy these and don't consider other headphones (I've tried lots in stores and took an online risk with these) at this price as these are the best far succeeding top comsumer brands which cost over £250! Get a decent amp, the NX2 I like and it has a huge battery life so perfect for long journeys with no power source. Enjoy the music :)

Im a bit of a headphone freak. I hate bad headphones with bad sound quality.
I recently bought a new guitar with a boss gt100 effects unit. I needed some good headphones for practicing to plug direct to the unit. I have a set of Bose quietcomfort 35s for music but as they arent made for studio work they were no good through my effects unit and amp.

I bought some sennheiser hd200 pros for about £55, they are ok but distortion sounded muffled and a bit muddy.

A number of websites recommended these from audio technica and i must say they put the hd200s to shame. The tone of my guitar really comes through, bith clean and distortion are perfect. In my opinion these are wprth every penny

Absolutely great headphones that are well constructing using mostly some kind of plastic but is very strong. No scratches or anything after over 1 year of usage but the ear cups have began to deteriorate.

Great quality sound and truly effective noise cancelling with crystal clear highs and lows. But as with most of other customers they've really let themselves down by the excessive clamp the device has. After an hour or so of wear the mandible joint where the jaw meets the bottom of the ear is really uncomfortable.

As a result I tried what others recommended and replaced the earpads with brainwavz but alas still no improvement. I had no choice but to send them back.
