The North Face Men's Vault Backpack can be used for compact carrying with enough room to tote books and binders. Stuff the main compartment with bulky books and use the secondary compartment with the organisation to neatly stash school and work essentials. The removable hip belt supports and secures the pack especially in the saddle. The FlexVent suspension system comprises compression moulded shoulder straps and a padded air-mesh back panel with spine channel which ensures support and ventilation for several hours.

The colour (Zinc Grey/Vaporous Grey) is nice and a little different although can pick-up some scuffs. But it was the cheapest colour option and I am a little "tight" like that so I lumped for it. I am not complaining though as it looks professional as a North Face rucksack can.
My only gripe (and I would knock a half star off for this) is a lack of additional pocket or divider in the main compartment. For anyone that needs to carry files or books, it would be nice to segregate the laptop charger inside. I tend to keep my smaller items in the fairly spacious outer pocket, but as a result books tend to get a little mangled if languishing around in the bottom of the main compartment. It's not a deal breaker by any means but would be nice to have.
Best of all though is the straps and vented back. It is exceptionally comfortable to wear even when fully loaded. My only wish is that I didn't buy one sooner.
Notice: it has just no pockets inside the big compartment.
I bought this as a holiday bag that doubles as a flight bag so it's a real niggle.
I like having only 2 zipped compartments so obvious where my passport, money etc is located.
Comfortable on the shoulders. unfussy straps.
The shoulder straps are fairly thick and soft so are pretty comfortable. There is an adjustable chest strap which has an elastic part but there is no waist strap. This is fine though as I don't think it is needed in a backpack of this size. Just might be an issue if you use it for cycling and want the added stability. But for just walking around, this is fine.
There are 2 net pockets either side for water and an attachment point in the middle of the back of the rucksack to attach a light for cycling. The zips are also good quality and open and close easily.
There is also a thick loop on the top of the rucksack which is actually a nice addition and I tend to pick the rucksack up by this quite a lot, just to throw it under a desk or put it on a table.
The side of the rucksack which faces your back is cushioned with a gap down the middle to allow air to get to your back and stop you from sweating. I can't say how cool this has kept me but I haven't had any huge problems although I expect it won't be as good as some of the mesh backs you can get with some more expensive hiking rucksacks. The back is also very rigid which makes the rucksack feel great on your back.
On the inside.....
There are only 2 pockets. A main one which is lined and has a laptop sleeve which can fit a 15.4 laptop nicely. I have also used it to carry my 13 inch macbook whilst inside a laptop sleeve of its own for super protection. I also like that it is a sort of floating pocket with extra cushioning at the bottom such that when your laptop is in, it never hits the bottom of your backpack. This is great because otherwise everytime your backpack is placed down the laptop might take a hit at the bottom.Read more ›
The pack is also quite small (far too small for me) so it looks a bit silly on a 6ft3 bloke. It also has a rolled front edge on the bottom so the bag falls forward when you put it down. This is one of those products that rely on the brand name alone rather than reputation for sales. If it didn't have North face on the front I don't think many people would buy it and I know for a fact it would be less than half the price. North Face are getting too mainstream for their own good.
