Fantastic Pair of headphones, don't be put off by their age, they still sound amazing.

Sennheiser's HD580 headphones were in the 1990s the companies flagship headphone. These headphones are very similar to the HD600 model which has a different grill and is differently painted. The design of these headphones is modular. The driver units are connected to the headband via a yoke making the whole area of the driver housing unobstructed and thereby maximising that area. Having dismantled these and other Sennheiser headphones I am surprised by how small the drivers are (50mm diameter) and that there is only one driver to cover such a large frequency range. This model features a replaceable cord to complete its modularity. Due to the extensive use of plastics this headphone is light on the head (it weighs 260g). This makes for a comfortable headphone simply due to lack of weight making long listening possible. I previously owned some HD595s which I liked and I will compare the HD580 to them. The HD580 headphones are high impedance at 300 ohms. Most headphones have much less resistance. This makes them difficult to drive although in this respect they are not as bad as I had expected. My old iPod Classic 5G might struggle on some albums with low signal levels with the volume at around 80% but overall it's not really an issue. These headphones ideally pair with a headphone amplifier. This means you can comfortable drive the headphones and supply them with a quality signal. The HD580s scale well but need a high quality source/amplifier to produce their best. This is where many owners fail to utilise these headphones capabilities using them with computer sound cards or unamped with less than hi-fi portable players. The HD580s are about balance and accuracy. They don't over emphasise or de-emphasise any part of the bass/mid range/treble frequency range.Read more ›

The first time I placed these headphones on and powered up my laptop, they didn't leave my head for 6 hours. And that 6 hours was one total rush of exhilaration.

They introduced me to sounds that I never knew existed. Being a non-audiophile I know not much more than the average guy about Hi-Fi, and experience to date had only been listening to cheap < $50 'cans'.

Totally stunning sound. I really can't articulate all the fancy terms but to my ears they sounded totally sweet.

One of the best purchases I have ever made.

I have been using these Headphones for ten years, and have replaced the leads three times, and just, and only just now need to replace the earpads. Yo! Turn off the tone/graphics controls! You don't need them with this kit, unless you want your head shaken with Bass etc; the top end is as clean as a whistle. Worth every penney!
