This is a brilliant game, and has turned out to be my girlfriends favorite. The quality of the pieces is excellent and the cute designs really make it a pretty game to play (i like my board games to look great). It's simple enough to be enjoyed by younger people, but there's enough strategy to make it quite competitive for any age.

I play a lot of games with just my girlfriend, and it's hard to tell what works with 2 players and what claims to but fails horribly, so incase there's anyone in teh same situation, this one works just as well with 2 as it does with a group

Bought this for my daughter-in-law who had played it before and loved it so thought she should have one of her own. She is thrilled with it and I have played it too. Takes a bit of learning but is good for the brain and it is a timeless so will be played for years. My 7 year old granddaughter is loving it and gradually getting to grips with it. A real family game.

This is a beautifully-presented game with simple rules but a surprising depth of strategy. Players compete for the Emperor's favour, scoring points as they complete the objectives set out for them on their objective cards, all relating to the big man's bamboo garden. Plot cards are relatively easy to score, awarding a small number of points for laying out the garden just so. Panda cards are in the middle, awarding you points for feeding the panda while the gardener has the toughest job of all, but also the most points on offer.

One off the interesting things about this game is the fact that players share the resources. Everyone gets to control the gardener (he helps to grow the bamboo) and the panda (he eats the bamboo) and you can all tap into the irrigation network. That's quite clever. And it's also mildly educational, having already prompted a conversation about what "irrigation" means with my eight-year-old (he's winning 2-0 as I write this). With so many ways to score points, there's rarely a dull moment and there is the added weather mechanic that allows you to bend the rules within the rules themselves, if you get what I mean? No... Okay...

Usually, a player gets to take two DIFFERENT actions per turn. Depending on the weather (shown on a six-sided dice) he might get three instead, or be allowed to take the same action twice, or move the panda out of sequence, and so on. It would have been a good game without this mechanic but having it there makes every turn exciting yet so simple and quick that you never feel like you're waiting around for your go.

Also, the victory mechanic is good. The first player to score a preset number of cards gains the Emperor's favour (itself worth extra points) but then everybody else gets one more go.

Firstly, the game artwork is cute. No one likes an ugly game, no matter how good the gameplay. But they haven't skimped on the gameplay either. The game is fun and not too complicated to learn. I haven't played it enough to get into complex strategy, but I can tell that the more one plays, the more interesting it will be to play as players learn better strategies. Finally, I played with my father, who hates board and card type games. I had to cajole him into the first game, but he has actually initiated several games since then. So, all in all I can say that it is fun to play, easy to learn, and visually stimulating.

There are only two (mildly) negative things I have to say about the game. First, I wish they had included more wooden action markers. One of the variables of gameplay is that you get an extra action, but because there are only two action markers per player, another marker would have been nice. Not a hard problem to solve at all, though, I just use one of the spare gray cutout pieces. The other thing is that this game probably doesn't appeal so much to hardcore gamers, as I suspect it will turn out to be a little too simple, with not enough variables for people who game a lot. However, for beginners or younger players, it's an excellent game, and for more experienced gamers, it is cute and good for a few games or games with less game-inclined friends. Not least of all because no one doesn't want to play a game with pandas! Overall, I would say it's an excellent addition to any game collection.

Fantastic game for the whole family and can be played with just 2 players. My boyfriend and I find it hard to come across interesting games we can play on date nights that aren't too quick-fire or repetitive, and we just love this one :)
You gain points by doing three different actions, which means you aren't always doing the same thing (unless you always pick the panda like I do!).
My 6-year-old nephew loves it too, and was very proud to have understood how the irrigation worked!

My son's choice for birthday money spending after we watched it played on TableTop with Wil Wheaton - great game, lovely quality board tiles and character pieces! It's not complicated, but I'm glad that we had watched the episode through as it allowed us to pretty much just play straight from the box with only a brief refresher of rules, without having to read through the whole rule book - that could be the ADHD family experience talking, but if you feel the same, the episode is worth a watch :)

Our games usually last 40-60ish minutes and requires a large area with set up, so this is definitely for dedicated table top game time. We've played this game so much and still love it every time - replayable and won't drive parents insane, either :)
