Stay on pace for your next personal record with Garmin Forerunner 235
Wrist-Based Heart Rate
Forerunner 235 uses Garmin Elevate heart rate technology. An optical sensor measures heart rate 24/7 at the wrist, giving you the option to run without a strap. Its colourful gauge identifies your heart rate zone and beats per minute in real time.
On and Off Road Running
A built-in accelerometer captures distance and pace data when you’re running on an indoor track or treadmill. Forerunner 235 estimates VO2 max, recovery time and predicts your race times for several distances when used with the heart rate. Receive audio prompts for lap times.
Once you’re done running, it doubles as an activity tracker, counting your steps and calories throughout the day. It also reminds you to move after sitting for more than an hour.
Forerunner 235 is compatible with GPS and GLONASS satellites to locate your position quickly and precisely whether you’re running deep in the woods or near tall buildings.
Customise Your Watch and Your Training
No two runners are the same, and neither are their goals. Set yourself up to reach yours by downloading advanced workouts and training plans to your Garmin Forerunner 235 from Garmin Connect. Customise your watch face with any photo from your mobile device. Simply download the free Garmin Face-It App, choose an image from your photo library, add the time and set it as your watch face. You can also customise your data fields, and download widgets and applications all for free at Connect IQ.
See incoming email, text messages, call alerts, calendar reminders and more on Forerunner 235, from your compatible smartphone.
Concise, easy-to-understand charts, graphs, maps and more let you view your activities, track progress toward goals and wirelessly upload and share relevant data directly with the online Garmin Connect network. So, you can compete with friends or family members on weekly step or running challenges — and compare your results in real time, using the LiveTrack feature. You can also use the Garmin Connect Mobile app’s wireless connectivity links to receive current weather conditions, forecasts and smart notifications right on your Forerunner 235.

Having done plenty of research, read reviews and looked at some watches in stores, the Garmin seemed to fit the bill with all the features I would ever likely need (plus more) and importantly good clear customisable data screens.
My first impression, once unpacked was how light the watch is, although it really is well made the plastic housing and general lightness give a false impression of it being a bit cheap.
When it's first turned on it takes you through a few screens to enter some basic data and decide a few settings, the rest is customisable through the Garmin Connect web app. I chose to disable the smart notifications, which will display messages and emails etc on the screen once linked with your phone as I'm not desperate to be constantly alerted to activities taking place on my phone.
It was charged within a couple of hours and ready for my first run. I love the customisable data screen which allowed my to set a readout for pace and distance, giving large bright figures that are easy for me to read during a run.
The rubber strap is comfortable, even when it it done up quite tightly to ensure the wrist heart rate monitor works effectively.
Following exercise the watch syncs easily with the Connect mobile app on my iPhone and the data is then instantly available for review via the Connect web app. The watch collects and analyses so much information that there is data galore in the apps and this is easily exported to favourite 3rd party apps such as Strava, Nike+, Runkeeper, and the iPhone Health app.
I've had one issue in the first month of ownership where it stopped recording my sleep data on alternate nights, however I found Garmin support very helpful and a short online conversation soon helped to sort things out.
All in all I'm thrilled with the watch and certain it will serve me well for years to come, I just wish it could make me faster :)
VO2 MAX estimation will not kick in unless you go for a run outside using gps.
No automatic recognition of workouts like FitBits ability to detect when on elliptical trainers or other gym related workouts.
Synchronization between Garmin Connect and other popular apps seems one way (I would like the Technogym Mywellness cloud to be able to send data back to Connect to sync)
Nice to wear
Easy to clean/charge
Nearly 1 week of battery in normal use (1hr gym session 6 days, all day heart rate tracking
Had 9hrs using GPS and heart rate while hiking with 32% remaining
Nice easy to add apps/clocks
The biggest down side is the HR monitor. It's fine during the day walking around etc, but only works 50% of the time when I'm running, apparently I can run a 6:30 mile with a HR of 100 :) I've just purchased a chest strap and I hope that will improve things.
If you are wanting to train using heart rate zones don't rely not the wrist based hr, buy a 230 and chest strap.
On opening the box I thought the watch looked a little large, but as soon as I picked it up I knew I had made the right choice. The watch is so light that its size really isn't an issue, you barely feel it on your wrist and the larger display is great for glancing at mid workout. The strap is comfortable and very breathable, which means I have had no issues with irritation. I have purchased a screen protector, as the watch doesn't feel as solid as my Samsung and I am prone to bashing/scraping my watches.
So far I have been very impressed with the battery life- I have only had to charge this watch once in 5 days! Honestly, it's a revelation and I am loving not having to take a charger everywhere I go. The activity tracking is also great, I think my Samsung was giving me a lot of 'free steps' as I have definitely had to move more to reach my daily steps goal with the forerunner. The Garmin connect app is great and gives a lot of useful insight into your activities. I tested my forerunner against a cycling computer and the results were identical, I have since bought a HR strap so I can put the watch on my handlebars and use it as a cycling computer for future rides.
My only gripe is that not all WhatsApp messages are displayed on the watch face, but I am not missing any of the other smartwatch features at all and I am actually liking using buttons rather than a touch screen. My advice to any sporty technology lover? Ditch the smartwatch and grab a forerunner, you will be pleasantly surprised.
My big criticism is the wrist based heart rate which doesn't follow changes in effort (I used it back to back with the 410) so for any interval sessions I will still have to wear a chest strap HMR. With this and the HR sensor on the back of the watch being quite uncomfortable, I think that I would have been better off saving money and buying a 230.
