Product Description

Data Robotics- Drobo- 4 Bay Storage Array

Manufacturer's Description

drobo

Fully automated storage you don't have to manage

front

Chances are, you get passionate about creating or collecting digital content, not about managing the storage where it lives. For you we've created Drobo, the first robotic storage device that takes the pain out of keeping your content safe.

Drobo guards everything on it
Drobo combines up to four hard drives into a big pool of protected storage. Start with two, grow to four, then upsize smaller drives to get terabytes of protection.

Drobo upgrades capacity on-the-fly
Add drives to Drobo at any time. Mix 'n' match capacities, brands or speeds. No down-time, data migration, or waiting to access new capacity. Drobo works the way you do.

Drobo lets you "pay as you grow"
Hard drives get bigger and cheaper all the time.  Don't buy storage capacity until you need it.  Buy capacity "just-in-time" possibly saving you hundreds of pounds.

Drobo manages storage, so you don't have to
Just connect Drobo to your Mac or PC.  No software required.  No RAID levels.  No management or configuration.  Drobo does everything for you.

Get rid of multiple external drives.  Avoid the complexity of RAID.  Attach a Drobo storage robot to your system and let it manage your storage so you don't have to.

Robotic Operation
Drobo is programmed to take actions on your behalf; always ensuring it's keeping your data safe and optimized:
  • Auto-formatting of added drives
  • Auto repair of data after drive failure
  • Auto repair of data corruption
  • Auto repair of data redundancy
  • Auto expansion of storage pool (when drives are added or upsized)
  • Auto sense & display of capacity used
inside
(drives not included)

Consolidated Capacity
Regardless of how many hard drives are installed; your Mac or PC sees one large drive:
  • Consolidation of storage into large pool
  • Accessible via High-Speed USB 2.0
  • Accepts one to four drives
side

Automated Protection
Data on Drobo is automatically protected against drive failure and data corruption:
  • Redundant protection of all data
  • Protection against drive failure
  • Protection against multiple drive failures
Flexible Configuration
It's extremely easy to add capacity to Drobo; just like adding ink to a printer:
  • Uses standard 3.5" SATA I or II drives
  • Accepts any brand, capacity, or speed
  • No tools, just insert drives into slots
Infinite Expansion
Expand capacity forever by adding new, or upsizing installed drives without data migration or configuration:
  • Insert new drives to any available bay
  • Replace installed hard drives with larger drives to increase total capacity
  • New capacity is available instantly
  • Add drives without downtime or configuration
back
Intuitive Indicators
Drobo informs you what actions are required with simple to understand indicator lights (no software required):
  • Green = healthy, no action necessary
  • Yellow = low, add drive here soon
  • Red = full, add drive immediately
  • Flashing red = failure, replace drive

I have been using my Drobo for about a month now and i am very pleased with it. The details within the Amazon page sum up the machine very well, and it really does what it says on the label, and is very easy to use.

I am a Mac user and the software works seamlessly with the Mac.

I am now storing all my multimedia files on the Drobo with the knowledge that it is all back up safely.

Well worth a look, and purchase!

My experience of this device is not good. It sounds great in principle, but in practice it just doesn't work. Every 2 months or so the device becomes corrupted by directory errors. This requires fixing using a disk repair utility and there are lots of errors - see below:

• 25 iNode(s) had a link count that was repaired.
• 71 Folders had a directory entry with an incorrect flag that was repaired.
• 2 Folders had an incorrect item count that was repaired.
• 1,220 Folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that was repaired. • 138 Folders had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired. • 117 Files/Folders had to be moved to the "Rescued Items" folder.
• Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.

It's not just me - its seems a common theme (Google "drobo directory errors") So as a backup for precious data it doesn't fill me with confidence.

UPDATE Over a year having purchased this device and after having had to repair the directory about once every two months, the device is now non-repairable. I have lost all of the files backed up on it - fortunately I have Dropbox to fall back on. This product is completely unfit for it's sole purpose - purchase at your risk.

I've had it for 6 months. It does what it says on its (very heavyweight) tin. It is now telling me that it needs a larger capacity disk.
It is not cheap but to have all my stuff out there in its big black box is great.

Downsides: yes it could be quieter but it's only a hum in "F". It's rather heavy (and it doesn't like being carried around). It would be better with:

* Firewire 800 (I have an old version but the newer ones have it)
* cheap 2TB SATA drives.

Would I buy another one? I just did: a Drobo S. I'll be selling this one as soon as I've transferred the data.

This should state more clearly if it is the USB 2.0 only version (previous) or the one with firewire 800 and USB 2.0. I have had my version 2.0 for about a month and while I don't' think it's as easy to use as the manufactures make out, once you understand its quirks and have resolved them it is a very useful piece of kit.
