I have used the device for 18 months with no problem, and now it is dead instantly.
The reason for giving 3 stars is not only to this NAS, but all of them with single bay. Since the NAS device will work all the day, even for weeks without switching off, the reliability is a problem. That's why none of the NAS devices with single hard drive bay are reliable. I would highly recommend you to go for RAID versions with multiple HD bays, such as Linkstation DUO.
Another problem is the DLNA protocol software (Twonky). DLNA doesn't support many movie features,i.e., subtitle, many video and sound formats, that is natively supported by the TV. So, I won't recommend the NAS if you are planning to watch movies via DLNA. I don't think other NAS have better DLNA protocols, better than Twonky.
Finally, the hardware used in the system is Western Digital Cavier Green, which has problems with reliability.
Please, think twice when buying this device or any NAS with single HD bay.
My unit has been going solidly for over two years now but I would advise anyone looking to use a NAS to store important files to always keep at least one backup and keep it off site. After all, if you are burgled and they steal the NAS and the backup drive you are stuck.
My only gripe is that it does not have a wide foot pad like I've seen on some routers so it can easily tip over on its side since it is much taller than its base is wide. This led to the first accident when the unit fell on its side while it was on. The software on it malfunctioned and the unit went into an emergency mode where it could only be accessed from as a shared file system but all the extras i.e. media server, bittorrent client stopped functioning. I contacted buffalo and was able to download the latest update and it was working again, though all the active torrents were lost.
Same thing happened again during a power outage and all the active torrents were lost again.
Apart from those, excellent and reliable product, many extras, bittorrent, media server and more.
I will be getting a bigger one soon once this gets filled up
Fast enough, reliable, easy to link and stream.
The BitTorrent client is ok if a little ugly on the eye as is the web interface, the ony downside is that I have struggled to get the iPhone and iPad app to work. I work in an IT environment but found it a little cumbersome and eventually gave up as a bad job.
Its a little bigger than a hard drive, shiny black plastic case with some chrome effect trim looks very professional.
It came brand new with instructions and cables, unfortunately i am having problems with my wifi so have yet to set up and test it.
