After charging the battery I soon got to grips with the camera. I wanted to test out the Duel Pixel Autofocus and the articulating screen. Two features sadly missing from my previous DSLR’s. I was very impressed by how well the autofocus tracked my face as I moved around. The microphone wasn’t too bad though this was easily remedied by a shotgun mic which slotted into the hot shoe slot. A checked the video footage later on and really was blown away at how well the camera kept pin sharp focus on my face. Then I thought I’d try some still photos. This wasn’t too important for me as I already have my 6D for that. Though the 1.6 crop factor would turn my Canon 70-200mm IS USM L mk2 lens in to a 112mm to 320mm lens which might be useful when I need that extra reach.
The camera performed well although I probably wouldn’t use an ISO beyond 800 or 1600. But that said the image quality was good. The camera was very easy to use and as I began to use it. I wish I’d had something this easy to use when I first started. For absolute beginners then this would be a good camera to start with. For those that are familiar with Canon cameras then I would turn off the instructional guides as it can get in the way a little. But that’s easily done.
Overall I am very impressed with this camera. Couple this with a Canon 10-18mm IS USM lens and a shotgun microphone and you have a fantastic video camera. The beauty of this camera is that you have such a wide range of lenses to choose from. Both EF-S and EF mount. Which is why I didnt opt for a mirror less camera and then have to buy an adator as well.
Yes you do not have 4K with this camera but you have to ask yourself whether your computer can substantially process high resolution video?. Especially when most people watch videos on their phones or tablets which do not display in 4K.
Also most YouTube videos are shot at 1080p anyway so it’s not lik it’s a big deal. Maybe in 5 years time when 4K is more widely used. Then it might be wise to have it in a camera. But for now the quality is more than acceptable....In fact I’d say the video picture quality from this camera is gorgeous. Especially if you use an aperture of F2 or F4 then the isolation this depth of field gives. Separating your subject from its background is wonderful.
I would recommend extra batteries as the second day of shooting my battery did run out and this cut short my filming for that day. Hardly surprising considering how small this camera is and how small the battery has to be. Plus if your using this camera for video then I would also recommend an external microphone. For an entry level camera then this camera punches above its weight. It’s easy to use and the picture quality is very good.
The build quality is superb. It's compact and made from quite a robust composite plastic which has a nice grippy feel to it. This makes the camera very light and comfortable to hold.
The picture quality is also amazing!! The photos come out crisp with a nice balance of colours. I've taken some really nice photos with this camera. I'd recommend it to anyone starting out with DSLRs.
The manual GUI takes getting used to but some tutorials and looking at the instructional manual helps very quickly but it's very easy with the tips they give you in the guided interface.
Great camera overall for getting used to photography/videos and to polish up them skills.
when i opened the package the camera looked tiny even compared to 1100d. when i hold it my little finger is not on the grip. to be honest i wasnt even sure at the begining if i wanted to keep it. i dont have huge hands with thick fingers but it was a bit unusual to hold this camera in my hands. i have to say it took me some time to get used to it. its definately not for big hands. this camera has best balance with canon 50mm 1.8 or similar, as its accually very light. when i put my 24-104mm lens(which i bought thanks to great price drop on this camera) on it the balance is not great. this lens looks like a big zoom on this tiny dslr. the body of the camera feels light and quite plasticky. you do want to protect it from bumps and scratches. i was also missing the buttons you get on standard canon like white balance and picture style, but as i realized later you can you can access them on touch screen via quick menu button. not as great, but survivable.
now after two month i have to say i really start to like this camera. the picture quality on both stills and video is much much better than my old camera. now i can finally use an STM function on lenses, which is fantastic. and because its so small it fits into my old camera bag with all the lenses. tiltable touchscreen is great. wi-fi is great to have, but its not always working properly, i.e i can transfer images to my phone and canon gateway no problem, but it takes ages to transfer even one image to my laptop, it almost freezes, so i have to use a cable(which is not included by the way)to transfer images to my pc. also a thing to note is that this camera has the same cmos sensor and digital processor as its bigger brothers like 800d and 77d, so it is capable to make stunning pictures.
I dont regret buying this camera, perhaps i wouldnt buy it at full price though. its definately a good upgrade for me.
ps: two things to notice, i found battery life is not great compared to my previous cameras, and spare battery cost 45 pounds!!! another thing is i couldnt find any battery grip for it even chinese third party. its a shame as battery grip would help to hold it more comfortably
