A 4 CD set featuring cornet player Red Nichols who, when I was a lad, was always considered to be a poor imitation of Bix. In reality he is a an excellent and talented musician and arranger who always employed good sidesmen and if you like 1930's/40s jazz this may be for you.

Format: Audio CD
Red Nichols was probably the most prolific of all recording artists during the jazz age. In many ways he personified the hot dance music of the roaring 20's and this anthology provides an excellent introduction to his work. As a trumpet player, although lacking Bix's genius, he was thoroughly competent in both ensemble and solo roles. He also employed, as sidemen, some of the finest musicians active in New York at the time.

The first two discs of this set include Miff Mole on trombone and the interplay between the two brass instruments is remarkable for its inventiveness and creativity. Fud Livingstone is present on clarinet on some tracks and also contributes some fine arrangements of which 'Imagination' is especially notable.

On the third disc, Mole is replaced by Jack Teagarden and Glenn Miller. Pee Wee Russell and Benny Goodman are also featured and contribute fine solos. 'Rose of Washinton Square' is arguably the finest track with superb solos from Teagarden, Bud Freeman and Joe Sullivan. These however are topped by Pee Wee's contribution - one his very finest and one of the great moments of early jazz.

The final disc is a dixieland session from 1949. It is pleasant enough and notable for the solo and ensemble contributions from Joe Rushton. He was one of the greatest, and most underrated, baritone/bass sax players in jazz history and his work here is first class. The session as a whole though lacks the impact of Nichols' earlier groups. The band plays well - ensembles are tight and solos well constructed - but something is missing. Apart from Rushton, everybody just seems to be coasting; they can play this type of music in their sleep and that's what they sound like doing here!

All in all, an excellent, well re-mastered, issue which is probably the best Red Nichols anthology on the market at present.

Overall, this set can be highly recommended
