Many politicians have seen their careers careen off the tracks, but few instances have been captured so completely on film as the incisive and painfully funny Weiner. With unprecedented access to Anthony Weiner, his family, and his campaign team as they mount his New York City mayoral campaign, the film documents the impending political meltdown of epic proportions. What begins as an unexpected comeback from a disgraced ex-congressman takes a sharp turn once Weiner is forced to admit to new sexting allegations. As the media descends and rips apart his every move, Weiner tries desperately to forge ahead, but the increasing pressure and crippling 24-hour news coverage halts his political aspirations dead in their tracks. Weiner deftly teeters the line between political farce and personal tragedy, exposing the ex-congressman's hubris while highlighting the sheer ugliness of the media's takedown of his family. With the city of New York as a loud and bustling backdrop, this documentary charges through an increasingly baffling political campaign with unflinching clarity, humor, and pathos.

After two years away from political office, Weiner decides to run for Mayor in 2013 and allows a "fly on the wall" documentary crew unlimited access to his life and campaign, as it all unravels in front of him. And us.
In the US the word "Weiner" (wiener), in addition to being a surname, refers to a smoked sausage or hot dog....it is also a slang term for the male member, so, given Mr Weiner's predilection for sending photos of his privates to women he "met" on line, the ultimate cause of his falls from grace, the title of the documentary works on several levels.
Weiner comes over as an energetic and charismatic political campaigner, in addition to being rather insecure, egotistical and narcissistic. (Nothing new there in a politician, you might say). He also seems to have problems, both recognising and telling the truth, even to his wife. Not being a "sexter" (is that a word?) myself, the attraction of it alludes me. A view seemingly shared by his wife, who remains a stern faced, arms-crossed, figure in black lurking in the background through most of this, seemingly unable to quite grasp what is happening. Personally, I thought she came over as dignified and with political instincts far superior to that of her husband.Read more ›
Then in 2011 he got embroiled in a sexting scandal which led to him having to quit congress amid a flurry of media interest. Then in 2013 he decided to stand as a mayoral candidate for New York. Him and his wife gave film makers full access to then during the campaign period and the film premiered at The Sundance Film Festival. The events that unfolded during that campaign are al documented here including some seemingly honest pieces from Weiner.
As far as documentaries go this is a good one to watch as it is both well done and very entertaining – but I think that is because the story is so engaging and he is the sort of man that you kinda want to root for – and then again…. Anyway for US viewers they will likely have some knowledge of what transpired – but for the rest of us there is an interesting story here waiting to be viewed.
Now, you'd think watching the downfall and humiliation of a politician would be rather funny, but this is actually tough viewing. On the one hand, you're merely observing a political career publicly self-imploding, but on the other hand you're party to the media's relentless assault on an already humiliated man and his loving, loyal wife. And you feel for them both. It's pretty tragic to watch their descent really. But Weiner is still the architect of his own demise, so he is ultimately the villain of his own story, and some of his subsequent actions in reaction to the pressures of the press feeding frenzy are as politically inappropriate as they are humanly understandable.
What makes this documentary particularly interesting is the unprecedented look behind the scenes of a political crisis and how a sex scandal is dealt with. It also shows the news media at its worst. Reporters and commentators come off as opportunist, scandal-hungry vultures who are more interested in detonating a story for ratings and views than they are with reporting for the sake of the public interest and common good. We cannot discount the media bias towards Weiner's progressive campaign either. They were just waiting for a moment to pounce on him to tear him apart.Read more ›
