Product description

Product Description

A good-time girl, Nola Darling (Tracy Camila Johns), attempts to decide between her three steady men: caring Jamie (Tommy Redmond Hicks), self-obsessed model Greer (John Canada Terrell) and nutty bicycle messenger Mars (Spike Lee). Each makes his pitch to girl and audience alike before all three come face to face over Nola's dinner table at Thanksgiving. This is director Spike Lee's first feature film.

This is Spike Lee's first feature film and it is excellent. The production is shoe-string cheap, but the homemade feel to it works perfectly with the story he wants to tell. That story is about Nola, who is being sought after by three very different men and one woman, each of whom wants Nola as their possession. The style is mock-documentary, in a sense. Characters often turn and address the camera and seem to be recalling events and experiences. Other times, the action is in the present and the style is simply a shot scene. The film revolves largely around the rivalry between the three men and Nola's increasingly strenuous efforts not to become caged. The rivalry between the men and the woman is not as fully developed, except between one of the men and the woman. It's all very good, wildly funny at times (Spike Lee plays one of the three men and he has a terrific comic ability), and thoughtful. There are sex scenes and one scene that even the film describes as a rape. Not nice, and I think it could have been intimated, rather than portrayed. However, it is not gratuitous. It is important to see it as an act that one specific character commits.

It was very successful on release and crawled onto BBC2 quite soon after. It is very well shot and there are a lot of talking heads and beautiful black women. I wouldn't say it moves into Woody Allen's class but it is that sort of film. The basic tenet of the film is what women want in a man. Quite provocative I would say. You probably wouldn't get away with it today (2016) as the movie world is awash with anodyne movies about goodness. "Nothing wrong with that!" I hear you cry, but it has become a very one-sided industry since Spike Lee's debut/

But not great either. I'm a big spike Lee fan and loved Do the right thing, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Inside Man and others but this story had very little substance. She's just a normal girl and I dont see why the movie focuses so much on her sex life and relationships when they are pretty normal...I didnt quite pick up what the point of this film is. Maybe I missed something but she's not the scandalous female lead I had in mind when I bought it. Great style as usual from Lee however.

Still, for me, Spike Lee's best film. A joy - humerous and with a message that is as relevant today as when it was made.

I watched this when it came out and it has remained one of my favourite Spike Lee films. Great cast of characters.

Spike's first official Joint is a low budget, black and white film made in 1986. This is the first time I've seen it and I liked it. As a teenager, Do The Right Thing was one of my favourite movies and I always wanted to see this. There was talk about making it into a Showtime series but I guess that won't happen which is a shame, it could've worked.

Early days.

I wonder who the film is aimed at, never the less the story is funny and sweet.
Best scene in central park with the dancers
Well I think it is central Park.

Whats a few £s for a very good film.
I have seen one or two jokers (on the high street) charging over inflated prices for this.
