This was a two part series for Italian television as part of a regular showing of programmes about remarkable people. Italian TV is particularly good at producing well researched and beautifully presented films of this nature and it is well deserving of the accolades that it has received.

Most notable in this film is the acting throughout particularly of Sergio Castellito who plays the title role. Faced with the difficulties of compressing all the compelling evidence of the miracles performed by St. Pio we are given a moving and spiritually disturbing account of this wonderful man, who received the stigmata.

Unfortunately I feel that the political implications that underly the censoring of Pio by the Catholic church were rather skimpily exposed in this film leaving the viewer rather baffled about the reasons behind so many of what have subsequently been discovered as blatant victimisations of this well meaning man who often suffered from mean minded misrepresentation on behalf of his peers.

Nevertheless the moving and spiritually stirring ways in which Padre Pio survived the political onslaughts that plagued his life is beautifully protrayed.

The film fully opens up the dramatic implications of the existence of a prolific, uncompromising and holy saint in modern times.

the film about life of Padre Pio, from his childhood to his death on 23 /09/68 , no English subtitles , also to my surprise this is a shorter version of the same film with the same title , but produced in 2 parts in English ( region 1) and Polish version ( with Italian original and polish subtitles), additional 40 minutes are added in those versions, so clearly some scenes are missing in this particular film.
the film itself is beautifully made, with amazing, heart wrenching soundtrack I consider Padre Pio to be the second after The Passion of Christ by Mel Gibson most beautiful and well made religious theme film. highly recommended to everyone who speaks Italian& is interested in life of this amazing person Francesco Forgione known as Padre Pio.: )

Italian subtitles and, even though I do not speak Italian, all the more convincing for hearing the native language of the protagonist. Unlike other films of this genre the acting is natural and convincing. Padre Pio was truly a man of the people and of God. There are hundreds of personal testimonies that accord with impressions gained in the viewing of this film and verify the authenticity of Padre Pio's Sainthood.

The fact that Saint Pio had to undergo much persecution from The Church during his time as a Priest is yet another endorsement of sanctity. The scenes dealing with diabolical attacks were skilfully employed furthering an understanding that a Saint must battle not just against temporal authority but, while on earth, is in the forefront of the eternal conflict between Satan and Jesus Christ.
