Product Description

Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts at London’s O2 Arena. Chronicling the months from April through June 2009, this film was produced with the full support of the Estate of Michael Jackson and drawn from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage featuring Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. In raw and candid detail, Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT captures the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, creative genius and great artist at work as he creates and perfects his planned final London shows.

From Amazon.co.uk

It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

I have only played a short review of the Blu-Ray version on our Blu-Ray 4K compatible Panasonic player, which produces excellent picture/sound on other disc's, yet the picture quality is best equal to 460, not 1080, that our screen produces. So very disappointed and question if this is a genuine copy, as the one we bought 2 years ago and mislaid, was far better than this on an older Denon player. Will be in touch with Amazon over this issue as it could be this copy is at fault., I hope that's the answer.

This DVD is a compilation of raw video footage of the rehearsals for the much-aclaimed and long-awaiting return to the stage by the King of Pop but sadly it wasn't to be and the world has missed out. However, what we haven't missed out on is this insight into what the concert could have been like. We see Michael Jackson as a polite, humble, likeable and considerate man engaging with his dancers, musicans and fellow performers as he prepares for his comeback.

The DVD isn't a polished presentation which I feel is good - it captures the informal, relaxed setting of the rehearsals and banter between those involved. It feels more real, more intimate and gives viewers an insight into how the concert is put together blending live rehearsal footage with some of the spectacular video backdrops prepared. Michael seems more 'real' than in a conventional concert performance - he sings live (unlike many other performers!), has problems with his earpiece and generously encourages his musicians, notably the guitarist, to show off her prowess. His creativity and creative input can be shared through his filmed conversations with the show directors His choreography and dance moves are as impeccable as always with every single movement spot on and his drive and energy shown in the videos belie his 50 years.

The DVD gives an insight into the real Michael behind the concerts that might have been missed had 'This is It' reached fruition.

A recommended purchase for all Michael Jackson fans.

For many, Michael Jackson died a death many years before, with all the incomprehensible child molestation allegations and trials , pay-offs - weird marriages and the subsequent bizarre tales of his progeny, dramatic plastic surgery etc.etc. etc.- However, when watching 'This is It', I began to remember the Michael Jackson that an entire world was completely enamored with in the '80's. There he was, the sunglassed pale spidery spectacle, popping his rhythms as he emitted that falseto voice we all can hauntingly recall- like a very distant friend that you miss, but you can't remember why...but the film will remind you. It's mesmerizing-captured in filmed rehearsals, the magic of Michael Jackson was actually alive and well until his very fatal overdose. So, the film is a marvel to watch , yet the mourning and sense of loss happen all over again , the sorrow all the fans felt many years prior , all comes flooding back- as one realises when watching this last tribute, what a fantastic , talented quirky genius Michael Jackson was and the tragedy, that his reclusive personal life led to his demise.Buy this one- it's an historic account of one of the greatest musicians and entertainers of all time.

I'm not that much of a MJ fan, maybe in the early nineties when 10-15 I was. I bought this because it was cheap - £2. I thought there must be issues with I - one star reviews say how boring it is - well, it kinda is, it's just 80% handheld semi-pro footage of rehearsals for 1h50mins - not the most exciting to watch....buts its just gets 4stars for a chance to see MJ move one more time, his final performance of Billy Jean where the 20 something's dancers are in Orr and MJ just finishes with a humble 'so you get a feel of it'. It leaves you wishing he could of just done the show one more time, or at least one full dress rehearsal at theo2. Sadly that never happened and MJS and the crews massive hardwork never happened:(
