The Mephisto Waltz (1971) could be viewed as a mainstream Holywood studio's game attempt to make a kind of 'Hammer Horror' style feature film, probably prompted by the critical and box office success of Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" a couple of years earlier. However the tone, whilst containing some effective gothic elements in the sets and costumes, is all really rather mild, perhaps personified by a slighty incongruous Alan Alda as the male lead. Compared to hardhitters like the Omen or the Exorcist, the Mephisto Waltz is unlikey to give anyone nightmares, and indeed I see its director had a long CV from television, making episodes of shows like "Hawaii 5-0" and "Dr Kildare". It almost comes across as an outré Halloween edition of a detective show like Columbo, with the heroine trying to get to the bottom of an occult murder. The music is a strong element, both in the plot itself (Curt Juergens as a diabolical concert pianist) and Jerry Goldsmith's highly effective score.
As for the BluRay edition on a technical level - the picture is not exactly pin-sharp HD (I'm guessing it was made from a print or interpositive rather than original negs?) but this suits the mood well and the colours are vibrant. The sound is the original mono, with the dialogue all clear. For bonus features you a fairly cheesy commentary by two "film critic" dudes, and a more sober 20 minute comment featurette from another critic. It would've been nice to have some kind of interview with any of the original cast or crew, but I guess they didn't have the budget for that.

Awesome! An everyday story of satanism, sex, murder, and the quest for eternal life, starring Mash's Alan Alda, Jacqueline Bisset, and Curt Jurgens. Think Rosemary's Baby and similar 60s/70s genre pieces - crazy camera angles, a brilliant score, great script, and mostly excellent performances, all wrapped up with a killer twist. I'd not seen it before my gf showed me the trailer but I picked up the new 2017 DVD edition on a whim and it's a very nice print with excellent sound too.

The Mephisto Walts wont be everyone's cup of tea, but for me I love the 70's/80s horror films, and the Blu-ray transfer is very good.

You get some good bonus features plus subtitles English HOH, plus the film looks good with a 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio, sound mono 1.0 PCM, region B only.

Thankyou Fox "Midnite Movies". But I have to say I got this solely for "..Waltz" at a terrific price, and as it turned out, a terrific Widescreen (1.85.1) lovely colour print. The story is a bit like "Hands of Orlac" in it's basic premise of gifted muso using black magic (I think) to take over the body of a gullible much younger man and thus live on enjoying all the plaudits of his stardom as the world's finest pianist. Curt Jurgens is great as the ageing pianist and his scenes with Barbara Parkins have a real charge. But it doesn't stop there! We also can enjoy a very intense quite erotic Jacqueline Bissett in what I feel is one of her best roles as Alan Alda's wife (he is the "young mucician" taken in by Curt and Parkins. I have never liked Alda, and he doesn't change my opinion here, but that's just me.) So a good, well paced, directed and written, if slightly dated, romantic, necromantic thriller. Highly recomended. Why 4 stars? That's because, possibly my loss, I have no desire at all to see "House on Skull Mountain", tho I did check the print and it's very good. For "Mephisto" alone it would be 5 stars.
